The number of gold chain robberies has risen in urban areas especially in Kurunegala, Negombo, Tangalle, Gampaha and Anuradhpaura, the police said.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that women living in urban area have been advised to be more aware and to take preventive measures.

In the recent past many complaints had been lodged on gold chain robberies with the police. During investigations it has been revealed that the robberies were carried by two men or one person riding on a motorbike.

The police have detected that these robberies had taken place between 5.30am and 8.00am and also between 4.00pm and 7.30pm in the evening.

He said that during several robberies, few victims had sustained injuries in the neck region.

The police therefore advises the public not to expose the jewellery and gold chains they wear and to inform the police or residents of the area if such a suspicion arises. (Supun Dias)
