The Motor Traffic Department today requested persons with old driving licence to obtain the new ones with biometric details of the holder such as the blood group and organ donations.
Deputy Commissioner of the department Anuradha Wijekoon said old driving licence issued by the department had a tendency to fade and get discoloured very quickly and those problems had been rectified in the new licence.
However, he said that it is not compulsory but requested the general public to come and make use of this opportunity, to obtain a new driving licence as it would be of immense help at a case of emergency. (Sanath D)
Why cant we be like Roads Traffic Authority (RTA)of NSW,Australia and most countries to have branches island wide instead of expecting citizens to go all the way to wherever to get drivers licence, registrations etc ??

We live aboard is there a day service for people like us – we come once in two or three years and have to get back in a week or two .. Or we submit and do they send it home by post …
Lalith Tuesday, 09 November 2010 09:55 AM
Who is going to pay for this? Government? While we struggling to live how can we afford to this new developments? Increase salary first by 10,000 and then ask.
catout Tuesday, 09 November 2010 09:55 AM

It's not correct Ajith the whole Driving license section has moved to Werahera. Now they are very efficient & pleased. the environment is cool. You don't need any photoes etc. You only need medical certificate & ID. If you handed over docs in the evening you could obtain DL @ about 2-3pm as same day service.
the new DL is not a lifetime one, it has expiry dates in every category.

AJITH - IT SEEMS YOU ARE A NON-RESIDENT IN SRI LANKA LIKE ME - THE RMV IS NO LONGER AT NARAHENPITA BUT AT WERAHERA ON THE COLOMBO/PILIYANDALA ROAD SRI LANKA.
Abdul Tuesday, 09 November 2010 11:10 AM
One of my friends were there last month, he had a terrible time, a whole day wasted for no fault of us, I think the department should try to put up a mobile camp in schools to provide in each area to make it hassle free, I was told we need to be there by 6 am, is that true?
nayomie Tuesday, 09 November 2010 07:08 AM

I am using an old driving license which is very clear (Not faded).. Few weeks back i was told by a cop near Town hall that I cant use my current driving license because its old and I should be having the new license ,If i don't have it i was told I can get charged for that.. But deputy commissioner says its not compulsory.... I think they should educate the traffic cops prior implementing anything...
J Tuesday, 09 November 2010 11:43 AM

Yes there is a day service, but you will have to spend the whole day there
bash Tuesday, 09 November 2010 08:22 AM
They issue 100 tokens where as a crowd of over 250 comes daily, so many people who come to the RMV gates at 6 am are also turned away. This paves way for bribes and black marketeers.
TMA Tuesday, 09 November 2010 12:45 PM
Simply the economically devastated country is, trying to rig more money from ppl. This's pure Facism
Darren Tuesday, 09 November 2010 08:25 AM
RMV is the worst place to go in Sri Lanka. They treat People like dirt.what about the money they charged for faded license. They make deliberate mistakes in documents so that ppl will have to pay and get that rectified again.Terrible place.
ajith Tuesday, 09 November 2010 08:28 AM
The MTD should be service oriented and make less inconvenience to public after-all they are a key revenue earner.
mahesh Tuesday, 09 November 2010 08:29 AM
Dear readers! this is a trap! once you convert your licence to new one you have to renew it after 08 years. so there is no such requirement for old one.
rosh Tuesday, 09 November 2010 08:31 AM
hmmm somehow i prefer the old style.. the new one looks all flowery...
Mr.Copycat Tuesday, 09 November 2010 08:39 AM
I'm not renewing. the new one has an expiry date - so after that I need to renew again every 5 years.
NOPE! sir, I ain't doing it.

I dont wanna waste a day in that place.
Lankan Wednesday, 10 November 2010 11:12 AM
It's better to start a mobile services to every provinces for 5 to 10 days for change the old DL to new DL , otherwise it will be impossible.
SKB Tuesday, 09 November 2010 01:29 PM
they'll charge around 1000 i guess. And the new license will expire in 8 years. We should pay again and renew it.
Hemal Kirtisinghe Tuesday, 09 November 2010 01:29 PM
we should be able to get it on line like in most other countries. After all it is only renewal., Not new issue
mnsmart Tuesday, 09 November 2010 01:39 PM
What about the people in th outstation. should they come to Werahera to get a renewed license. pl someone advice
Digital Age Tuesday, 09 November 2010 09:21 AM
It’s high time to think of a single card for National ID + DL + Social Security etc. with a SIM. Then the authorities will be able to do their business much easier. (i.e., census + elections etc..)
Knight Rider Tuesday, 09 November 2010 09:21 AM
It would be much better if the traffic dept accepts all the RENEWAL Application on behalf of the MTD and help us get the new license.
Makaveli Tuesday, 09 November 2010 09:22 AM
hmmm good one, i wont be if they don't have renewal date like the old one.
P S Wednesday, 10 November 2010 04:45 AM
if you join the queue at 9am, you can get it by 2.30pm. I have experienced it two times.
