The Motor Traffic Department today requested persons with old driving licence to obtain the new ones with biometric details of the holder such as the blood group and organ donations.

Deputy Commissioner of the department Anuradha Wijekoon said old driving licence issued by the department had a tendency to fade and get discoloured very quickly and those problems had been rectified in the new licence.

However, he said that it is not compulsory but requested the general public to come and make use of this opportunity, to obtain a new driving licence as it would be of immense help at a case of emergency. (Sanath D)

One of my friends were there last month, he had a terrible time, a whole day wasted for no fault of us, I think the department should try to put up a mobile camp in schools to provide in each area to make it hassle free, I was told we need to be there by 6 am, is that true?

I am using an old driving license which is very clear (Not faded).. Few weeks back i was told by a cop near Town hall that I cant use my current driving license because its old and I should be having the new license ,If i don't have it i was told I can get charged for that..
But deputy commissioner says its not compulsory....
I think they should educate the traffic cops prior implementing anything...

the whole Driving license section has moved to Werahera. Now they are very efficient & pleased. the environment is cool. You don't need any photoes etc. You only need medical certificate & ID. If you handed over docs in the evening you could obtain DL @ about 2-3pm as same day service.

the new DL is not a lifetime one, it has expiry dates in every category.

they'll charge around 1000 i guess. And the new license will expire in 8 years. We should pay again and renew it.

it may be good idea, but do you know the hassle the people go through at werehera, i was told to come at 3.30 in the morning to be in the queue otherwise i will not get a ticket,why not make a mobile service to make life easy for the people

if you join the queue at 9am, you can get it by 2.30pm. I have experienced it two times.

It's better to start a mobile services to every provinces for 5 to 10 days for change the old DL to new DL , otherwise it will be impossible.

It’s high time to think of a single card for National ID + DL + Social Security etc. with a SIM. Then the authorities will be able to do their business much easier. (i.e., census + elections etc..)

They issue 100 tokens where as a crowd of over 250 comes daily, so many people who come to the RMV gates at 6 am are also turned away. This paves way for bribes and black marketeers.

RMV is the worst place to go in Sri Lanka.They treat People like dirt.what about the money they charged for faded license.They make deliberate mistakes in documents so that ppl will have to pay and get that rectified again.Terrible place.

Dear readers! this is a trap! once you convert your licence to new one you have to renew it after 08 years. so there is no such requirement for old one.

Why cant we be like Roads Traffic Authority (RTA)of NSW,Australia and most countries to have branches island wide instead of expecting citizens to go all the way to wherever to get drivers licence,registrations etc ??
