Speaker Chamal Rajapaksa, in his ruling against notices issued on him and the members of the select committee by the Court of Appeal, made particular reference to views expressed by Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe in the course of his intervention on the legality of the matter.

The minister raised a question of privilege, 15 members across the political divide expressed their views on the matter.

The Speaker, in his ruling, said a broad consensus emerged in the course of the debate on the central issue requiring his decision.

“I like to make particular mention of the view, clearly expressed by the Leader of the Opposition in the course of his intervention that the purported notices constitute an unwarranted interference with the powers and procedures of Parliament, and are invalid.  This was stated with greater clarity by MP Joseph Michael Perera as well,” the Speaker said. jayantha silva Friday, 30 November 2012 06:18 AM

What a dangerous situation for the people of this country to have a spineless man like this as the leader of the opposition .

    das Thursday, 29 November 2012 06:57 PM

Ranil is not an opportunist .. he makes decent people friendly decisions ... he is true gentleman !

chuti baas Friday, 30 November 2012 06:44 AM

A opposition politician is oppurtunistic by nature, looks for slips in
governance to exploit and should have a burning desire to make his opposition the government-Ranil has none of these qualities, not for the past 15 years, not now and his legacy will be as a man who did not oppose.

His main issue to overcome is another 6 years at UNP convention as puppet leader.

    Iqbal Friday, 30 November 2012 06:47 AM

Ranil did not want to see farther than the parliament. What will be the consequence of the impeachment proceedings?

Nimal Jayawardene Friday, 30 November 2012 06:58 AM

Ranil is no leader of the opposition. He acts like a spy planted by the government to put a spanner in the works. This opportunist should be got rid of if we are to have a decent .democratic UNP.run by intelligent leaders.

    Bandara Thursday, 29 November 2012 09:40 PM

Ranil communicated very clearly that he could neither form an alternative to the UPFA government nor could do his curent role as an effective opposition. Pathetic.

    prf Friday, 30 November 2012 07:52 AM

NEXT PRIME MINISTER IS RANIL THEN GAME IS OVER

    perumal Friday, 30 November 2012 08:17 AM

But the question is why doesn't he openly join the government without acting as the GA in opposition?

    Lobo Friday, 30 November 2012 12:34 AM

Ranil, as usual, shamelessly batting for the Govt.

Sonna Boy Friday, 30 November 2012 01:02 AM

Ranil is doing a fine job as usual for the UPFA

kondebadapu china Friday, 30 November 2012 01:17 AM

seeking protection for UNP convention from government.

    Ryan Friday, 30 November 2012 04:46 PM

He told this because this is what they have done and in line with the constitution. Shirani is already behind bars.

    Prophet Friday, 30 November 2012 01:25 AM

Next time vote for UNP, but don't give your preference to Ranil. That way he won't be in the next Parliament or Leader of Opposition.

    Alec Friday, 30 November 2012 01:30 AM

This is leadership qualities of an experience politician

Damma Deepa Friday, 30 November 2012 01:32 AM

" UNP must send him for a medical check up"

    SilverHawk Friday, 30 November 2012 02:04 AM

He is the next leader of UPFA ... lolz

    MalcomX Friday, 30 November 2012 02:13 AM

Wonder what will happed if Ranil wins.

    kumar Friday, 30 November 2012 02:42 AM

He should be sitting on the government side...why is he the opposition leader?

    rus Friday, 30 November 2012 10:22 AM

From UNP colletion money, otherwise he wont go for check up

kamal nissanka Saturday, 01 December 2012 12:08 AM

It is simple.if they do not abide by notices, court will decide the matter ex-party

jayantha silva Friday, 30 November 2012 10:39 AM

He should give up politics and stay at home. This country needs a strong opposition, not a puppet.

Calistus Jayatilleke Friday, 30 November 2012 04:09 AM

One wonders whether he is the Leader of the Opposition or Chief Adviser to the government.

    Nihal Saturday, 01 December 2012 03:37 AM

He is batting for himself and his henchmen are backing him to the hilt - literally!! When a man loses his self respect you done call him a gentleman, you call him a opportunist. What has been done to this once gigantic party is a crime. The criminals are Ranil and his "boys".

    perere Friday, 30 November 2012 05:11 AM

Ranil is part of the government is not good sign for the government since Ranil factor will loose government vote base. lol

    Hardball Friday, 30 November 2012 05:15 AM

Yes, an experienced opposition leader supporting the government.

    MWTA Friday, 30 November 2012 05:36 AM

Yes agree with Lobo, ranil means the Govt and the govt means Ranil.

Aney Machang Friday, 30 November 2012 12:43 PM

A slip of the tongue as it always happens to him without his knowledge.
