UNP MP Ravi Karunanayaka, in a surprise twist, entered parliament today morning in a national kit rather than his usual full suit, much to the surprise of his colleagues and other members of parliament.
This is the first time that Karunanayaka has entered parliament in the national white kit.

Ravi should be the leader of the UNP. He has the capacities.

Ravi is a senior politician, and very much in the public eye. When he makes such a radical change in his parliament attire, it is definitely a matter for speculation. Specially in the context of the UNP leadership struggle.

Guys, one of my uncle who was usually western kit suddenly change to the national kit and told us that because he loves to the country (Jathyaalaya), but the secret is he was suffering Inguinal hernia and not easy to wear the trousers.

I'm sure he's feeling uncomfortable in this new attire despite the fact that is more comfortable in a tropical country like SriLanka,His next step would be embracing Buddhism .Unp used to be the only party that had priciples and led by people who always stood their ground no matter what.Remember Sir John Kotalawala,Ranjan Wijeratne ,Lalith Athulathmudali. You could still win elections without having to sacrifice your identity ,all you have to do is work a little harder and smarter.

Ravi K is an arrogant type - quite unlike Ranil who is normally quiet & soft-spoken. Ravi K never even smiles with the public if he comes face to face with them normally, and reserves this face only for election time. Whereas Ranil is the same at all times. He doesnt put on an election face.

Now people who normally are garbed in western attire, occasionally wear the national costume - its fashionable. Ravi is an icon in fashion. So its nothing extraordinary. NOW PROBABLY THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL CONSPIRACY FROM A HOMEGROWN SOLUTION.

Does a man not have the right to wear what he pleases without speculations to why?
Ravi is a citizen of this Country and that is all that matters, what is all this nonsense abut suggesting him to change the true belief. If anyone does so he cannot be trusted.

Agree with Sarath's comment: The reason for this change must be that the sarong can be easily raised to navigate the parliament flood waters.

Never judge ppl by their dress... Late Mr Kadirgamar never wore national kit.. but was a patriot...

Possibly it would have occurred to him that projecting the 'common touch' that goes with the national dress is in the best interests of his political career.

You cannot fool the people in Sri Lanka by changing you suit. You can't attract sinhala votes just by wearing a national suit.

Are we going back to the Sigiriya era? If so, the male legislators could come bear-bodied, and women legislators....! What if the Veddas, the original people of Sri Lanka, came to parliament, what will they wear -- an axe on the shoulder and a loin-cloth?

Ravi K., if you think that you can fool the Sri Lankan people by changing just your dress, you are mistaken.

As the Parliament is inundated with flood waters, the move to shed europeon suit and switched on to national suit seems to be prudent. For an emergency he can raise his sarong to escape from flood waters.

should he seek permission to wear any dress he likes? I dont knw if Sajith & Ravi want to be the leader, they didnt say anything yet. If Sajith has the right to contest for leadership, Ravi too has the right as he is a senior memeber. Many people may not like Ravi, but he is a hardworking and determined guy and never deserted the party.

for the downfall of the UNP during 2003 as he was widely accused for the corruption in his ministry.

Karunanayaka is one of the best politicians in the Opposition, but I'm afraid he won't be able to capture the hearts of the masses in Sri Lanka. The only one who clearly has this ability is Sajith Premadasa who the UNP must give the leadership to and let him continue what his father stopped when he was murdered sixteen years ago.

Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:22 AM
You seriously think that someone who ridiculed the party in front on the nation (Pamankada - Alimankada fiasco) could stand up & say that he can lead the country largest party? I don't think so. Ravi K may be a professional but he has zero appeal to the masses. UNP need of the hour is a person who can appeal to the general masses.
Point to think..

Not sure though. There are better leaders in the society other than Sajith or Ravi for sure. OK, let's compare the two. Ravi is a man who often talks waffle (Medavachchi-kilinochchi is one example) but has he ever done anything, I mean anything to his voters? Sajith is somebody who talks sense and sense only as well as he tries his best to do something to his people, the public who voted for him, at least a few in Hambantota. So what is the guage here?

why guys based on his suit change you all are commenting as he's trying to get the leadership...
Actually to defeat a leader from south the leader should come from south....that's sajith....
