UNP MP Ravi Karunanayaka, in a surprise twist, entered parliament today morning in a national kit rather than his usual full suit, much to the surprise of his colleagues and other members of parliament.

This is the first time that Karunanayaka has entered parliament in the national white kit.

Ravi should be the leader of the UNP. He has the capacities.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 08:11 AM

Ravi is a senior politician, and very much in the public eye. When he makes such a radical change in his parliament attire, it is definitely a matter for speculation. Specially in the context of the UNP leadership struggle.

Guys, one of my uncle who was usually western kit suddenly change to the national kit and told us that because he loves to the country (Jathyaalaya), but the secret is he was suffering Inguinal hernia and not easy to wear the trousers.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:55 AM

I'm sure he's feeling uncomfortable in this new attire despite the fact that is more comfortable in a tropical country like SriLanka,His next step would be embracing Buddhism .Unp used to be the only party that had priciples and led by people who always stood their ground no matter what.Remember Sir John Kotalawala,Ranjan Wijeratne ,Lalith Athulathmudali. You could still win elections without having to sacrifice your identity ,all you have to do is work a little harder and smarter.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:44 AM

Personally believe RK is more presentable in his usual western outfit.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:37 AM

better send him to kilinochiya or medwachiya & look for pamankada voters who deserted him

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:34 AM

So at long last, he has entered the 'Main Street' ! Good luck!

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:24 AM

Just because the tiger changes the jungle, its spots will never !

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 08:29 AM

Why comment on dresses.any body has the right to wear any dress he wishes. please dont waste time commenting

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:13 AM

Ravi K is an arrogant type - quite unlike Ranil who is normally quiet & soft-spoken. Ravi K never even smiles with the public if he comes face to face with them normally, and reserves this face only for election time. Whereas Ranil is the same at all times. He doesnt put on an election face.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:09 AM

Now people who normally are garbed in western attire, occasionally wear the national costume - its fashionable. Ravi is an icon in fashion. So its nothing extraordinary. NOW PROBABLY THIS IS AN INTERNATIONAL CONSPIRACY FROM A HOMEGROWN SOLUTION.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:03 AM

Does a man not have the right to wear what he pleases without speculations to why?

Ravi is a citizen of this Country and that is all that matters, what is all this nonsense abut suggesting him to change the true belief. If anyone does so he cannot be trusted.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:58 AM

Agree with Sarath's comment: The reason for this change must be that the sarong can be easily raised to navigate the parliament flood waters.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:55 AM

You are very correct Mr. dssanayake. RK is RK.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:50 AM

Never judge ppl by their dress... Late Mr Kadirgamar never wore national kit.. but was a patriot...

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:50 AM

Possibly it would have occurred to him that projecting the 'common touch' that goes with the national dress is in the best interests of his political career.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:48 AM

You cannot fool the people in Sri Lanka by changing you suit. You can't attract sinhala votes just by wearing a national suit.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 08:37 AM

Is it a ploy to win UNP leadership?

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 09:12 AM

    same person with good ventilation.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 09:30 AM

We love Ravi K because he's like one of us - rich and famous. He's the only hope for us socialites to live in comfort at the expense of the nation and the common people.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 09:40 AM

Looks like Bandula Gunawardena has started a tuition class to teach MPs to wear the national dress. Ravi is one to pass out early.!!!

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 09:43 AM

Is he trying to get a new minister post ????

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 09:46 AM

Can I wear the Redda and hette to the parliament?

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 10:01 AM

    Good move.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 10:30 AM

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 10:36 AM

Well done RK. Keep up the good work & show your true colours of what U can do in White National Dress or Western suit.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 10:59 AM

Are we going back to the Sigiriya era? If so, the male legislators could come bear-bodied, and women legislators....! What if the Veddas, the original people of Sri Lanka, came to parliament, what will they wear -- an axe on the shoulder and a loin-cloth?

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:08 PM

Ravi K., if you think that you can fool the Sri Lankan people by changing just your dress, you are mistaken.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:14 PM

He might be expecting to be the next leader of the UNP.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 07:23 PM

The comments should really focus on why he wore the national dress?

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 10:53 PM

Big deal! Story of the century?

    Wednesday, 19 May 2010 12:01 AM

He knows that the 'tie & coat dominance' is now over.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:39 AM

    People know these old tricks.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:14 AM

So what? The man obviously felt like he needed more ventilation...

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:20 AM

He is vying for party leadership with Sajith.

See what people do to woo party votes.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:20 AM

This is big secret because he have idea to be leader. Karunanayaka I think Possible leader is Sajith so don't try to leader ship

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:20 AM

As the Parliament is inundated with flood waters, the move to shed europeon suit and switched on to national suit seems to be prudent. For an emergency he can raise his sarong to escape from flood waters.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:22 AM

Oh dear anything to give a good fight to Sajith P at the leadership tusele?

Well Mr. Ravik K Sajith worked hard in Tissamaharamaya. You better at least go to Kahatagasdigiliya and help the poor

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:23 AM

Dress is not only matter to become a leader !!! Need much more leadership qualities

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:27 AM

    So what is this news?

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:28 AM

Well complete the attire with a green sataka if you want to give an attire fight with Sajith. The planets are auspicious for Sataka people these day.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:28 AM

with the massive rain around,he might not be able to dry up the usual clothes. New one may have borrowed from one who lost.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:33 AM

Is he preparing to cross- over?

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:34 AM

should he seek permission to wear any dress he likes? I dont knw if Sajith & Ravi want to be the leader, they didnt say anything yet. If Sajith has the right to contest for leadership, Ravi too has the right as he is a senior memeber. Many people may not like Ravi, but he is a hardworking and determined guy and never deserted the party.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:35 AM

Next step, embrace Buddhism before claiming the right to leadership.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:35 AM

What a change. Looks like someone wants to feel the heart beat of the grassroots.... Is he trying to convey a message????

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:36 AM

Did he get in stitched in Pamankada or Medawachchiya?

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:38 AM

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:13 AM

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:40 AM

Goodness gracious when is he going to wear the same to his boss RW

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:40 AM

Will Bandula Gunawardena teach him how to wear the national dress?

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:47 AM

Atleast now the UNPers have realized that it's high time to adopt McDonald's Strategy. "Think Global Act Local" :D

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:54 AM

oh oh oh Prasan, Thats a very cheap one mate.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 05:57 AM

HAHAH must be after hearing Sajith Premadasa's speech the other day.!!

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:02 AM

This must be another reform from him to show that he has embraced the voice of Lankans.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:03 AM

Ravi may be eying leadership post in UNP. He was responsible
for the downfall of the UNP during 2003 as he was widely accused for the corruption in his ministry.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:05 AM

On your mark get set - next Give up Catholicism and embrace Buddhism...

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:08 AM

Ravi has better leadership capability than Sajith.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:15 AM

Karunanayaka is one of the best politicians in the Opposition, but I'm afraid he won't be able to capture the hearts of the masses in Sri Lanka. The only one who clearly has this ability is Sajith Premadasa who the UNP must give the leadership to and let him continue what his father stopped when he was murdered sixteen years ago.

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:22 AM

You seriously think that someone who ridiculed the party in front on the nation (Pamankada - Alimankada fiasco) could stand up & say that he can lead the country largest party? I don't think so. Ravi K may be a professional but he has zero appeal to the masses. UNP need of the hour is a person who can appeal to the general masses.
    Point to think..

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:22 AM

Learning fast but can you hide the spots...People are no fools my dear

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:22 AM

Too late RK. Will see after Sajith

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:26 AM

Not sure though. There are better leaders in the society other than Sajith or Ravi for sure. OK, let's compare the two. Ravi is a man who often talks waffle (Medavachchi-kilinochchi is one example) but has he ever done anything, I mean anything to his voters? Sajith is somebody who talks sense and sense only as well as he tries his best to do something to his people, the public who voted for him, at least a few in Hambantota. So what is the guage here?

    Tuesday, 18 May 2010 06:42 AM

why guys based on his suit change you all are commenting as he's trying to get the leadership...

Actually to defeat a leader from south the leader should come from south....that's sajith....
