For the first time in recent political history, UNP leader Ranil Wickremesinghe has appointed senior MP John Amaratunga as the acting opposition leader to stand in for him in parliament this week, sources said today.

Mr. Wickremesinghe is expected to undertake a foreign tour this week.  In the past, the UNP leadership used to appoint Karu Jayasuriya as the acting leader of the party when he (Mr. Wickremesinghe) goes aboard on private or official matters.  However, nobody has been appointed as the acting leader this time. Ranil is now slowly resorting to his loyalists and sidelining all other MP's who are either moderate of having reforming ideas.

Ranil Wickremasinghe lives in constant fear of losing his place as UNP leader and all the perks of the opposition leader. Never mind what happens to the party.
