United National Party (UNP) Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe said today that he would re-negotiate the stand-by arrangement of US$ 2.9 billion with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and strike a separate deal if he comes to power at the April 8 General Election.

Outlining his policies for the economic development, Wickremesinghe told a news conference a short while ago that the country’s total debt had swelled against the total revenue.

“Our annual revenue is only Rs.705 billion. Nevertheless, the debt and interest payment is Rs.825 billion,” he said. (KB)

Ranil, you are a very honest person. Sadly, in our country, we don't respect honest people.

Good luck! (by the way, I say that sarcastically...)

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 09:09 PM

Unfortunatley, the majority of voters in Sri Lanka are selfish. They don't believe a man with a vision. That's what we have been witnessing for the past 17 years ... Feel sorry for the future generations to come.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 08:39 PM

Sure you will Ranil ... but, try to win from the general election, not a facebook poll.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 08:37 PM

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 04:26 PM

The problem is Ranil cannot win the election. Therefore Truth your vision may not work.

You can keep on dreaming RW, you'll never get the chance.
But you will get the chance to create some sort of record for most number of defeats as a political leader.

Is this pie in the sky!
How do you know that you will be successful. This is not negotiating with Norway or LTTE.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 10:43 AM

    good idea..
the candidates of UNP for upcoming general election are really educated and expert on Economy
    the decision welcomed by all.
hoping better future to our country under Ranil's government.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 09:25 AM

There is no doubt that the economy will be in good hands if the UNP is in power. This is my view - sadly the majoritty think otherwise and the results will reflect this.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 09:11 AM

As Mr Wickremasingh very well knows that he will not be responsible for managing our economy he can promise or say any thing. How Lucky to the opposition leader.

    Wednesday, 17 March 2010 08:38 AM

Yes Ranil .....the prime question is the big "IF" . Persons like Mohan Lal Grero might be quite ok to contest. But look at the other guys including yourself.
