Two students of Zahira College, Puttalam were allegedly abducted and brutally assaulted by an unidentified group on Wednesday night, Puttalam police said.

The GCE O/L students Mohamed Naufer (17) and Mohamed Nizad (18) were abducted close to their places of residence, taken by cab to a house where they were assaulted and dropped back the same night near the Mari Amman Kovil in the old Puttalam-Mannar road.

Police said while the cab is believed to belong to a local politician, the motive for the assault was with regard to a love affair and a mobile phone text.
