More than 1000 people took to the streets obstructing the new Kandy Road at Weliweriya junction accusing the authorities of failing to resolve the ground water pollution that created a shortage of drinking water in several areas in the Gampaha District.

The protestors said the haphazard disposal of waste water from a factory resulted in this situation. Police have taken steps to divert traffic along byroads. (Pix and text by Upali Ranaweera)

Environmentalists should help these villagers by highlighting these villagers plight to the USA/UK/EUR buying offices of these products from this factory so that the responsible buyers will make a decision to boycott such products made by this factory by polluting the entire village water resources.
Environmentalists were successful in convincing DOLE/USA company to refrain from buying Cavendish bananas from SriLanka when the local party destroyed the environment to grow bananas. That is the only way to discipline these factory owners.
