An investigation has been launched over misplaced polling cards following complaints that several voters have not received their cards, the Postal Department said.

Deputy Postmaster General (Operations) Mr. R. D. P. Gamini speaking to Daily Mirror online said that an investigation was launched to find out how the cards were misplaced and new polling cards will be issued for the voters who have not received their polling cards due to their misplacement by postal officials.

He said that 247 cards have been misplaced in Kamburupitiya while 26 have been misplaced in Kotahena. He added that the Election Commission has been notified and that the new cards will be issued accordingly. (DM Online)

the print on the polling card is so small that the postal staff are finding very difficult to find the cards when people go to the post office. the most convenient answer is to say "no card" or "go and see your grama sevaka". to get our cards we had to argue and convince the staff that our names are in the polling list. this is despite the fact that the postman saying that he visited our house when we were not home.

Repeat of last Presidential Election in different form. Last election it was a postal strike prior to the election and voters were told that many voting cards were lying at the post office undelivered and they can vote if identity card number is given at the poll centre, but many names were not all listed in the register. But this time name are in the list but voting card misplaced.

Hi - Mr. Sameer we never had a free and fair elections since we gained Independence from British. All these politicians are struggling to form a Government of their own to ERADICATE POVERTY of all Sri Lankans. Feed them with BASMATI and have fish/meat and two vegetables diet ,give a very good EDUCATION to our children and keep them HEALTHY etc. etc. No politicans in the WORLD have such sympathetic HEARTS as our POLITICIANS. They go the extra mile to use THUGGERY/MURDER etc. etc. to FIGHT TO ERADICATE THE POVERTY OF SRI LANKANS. ALL IN THE NAME OF POVERTY. ANE PAWW. Good on you POOLITICOS. Nihalg

These are the cases that I come to public, sure there will be thousands of them misplaced. So much so for democracy and transparacy in the current administration!

This cast a serious doubt on the conduct of a free and fair election which we are yearning for. At a time where the Commissioner of Elections directives are grossly also ignored what more can be expected. It is high time that this whole system be changed to ensure law and order, dicipline and other values installed firmly, negatively we will be doomed for ever with no future.

Hope the ballot boxes wont be 'misplaced', How many things are getting 'misplaced' in this country? .... and we are looking at being the number 1 country in this region.

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 05:58 AM

so it's already clear that we are not going to have a free and fair election. always conduct investigations but never solve it I'm sure the govt ministers will have the answer for the missing polling cards so ask them. dont waste time and money on investigations

    Check Temple trees.

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 05:41 AM

    that will be right...

    Thursday, 21 January 2010 05:37 AM

hmmm..misplaced huh? wonder how many more are unofficially mis-placed? since the number is around 300, they should be printed as duplicate and marked on the register clearly to monitor if any of the misplaced cards turn up! hopefully they did have names on them... Sri Lanka needs some new technology to deter any attempts to meddle with polling cards.. hope the cards are not in the ballots already. :(
