Election monitors are to meet the Elections Commissioner Dayanananda Dissanayaka to discuss a spate of incidents which occurred in Nawalapitiya and urge him to address the issue, a PAFFREL spokesman told Daily Mirror online.
According to the spokesman who did not want to be identified, there were incidents of vote rigging, opposition polling agents being threatened, voters being chased away, illegal propaganda and some clashes.
“Some voters were threatened to cast their vote for a certain government candidate in Nawalapitiya and the people were not allowed to cast their vote freely,” the PAFFREL spokesman said.
The spokesman however noted that when the Elections Commissioner had contacted the police over the reported incidents the police had claimed that the poll in Nawalapitiya was free and fair.
The Elections Commissioner is expected to meet polls monitors, police and other authorities to discuss the outcome of the polls in Nawalapitiya.
Meanwhile PAFFREL recorded 113 incidents of election related violence from around the country, most of which are now being checked and the highest number of incidents were reported from Nawalapitiya, Gampaha, Kalutara and Puttalam. (Daily Mirror online)
