Following reports that the opposition was planning to stage a massive protest against the government and the President in Colombo on Wednesday, the police today warned that any attempt to disrupt the peace will be dealt with severely.

Police spokesman SSP I.M Karanaratna, speaking to Daily Mirror online, said that the police have not been informed of an opposition protest in Colombo but added that if such an illegal protest is staged there are measures that the police will take at the time.

He warned that if the protestors attempt to disrupt the peace then riot squads will be used to control the situation, as is the case with any other violent protest.

Sri Lanka will be like Zimbabwe, Iran, Myanamar, Libya and China very soon and I am worried about the future of our children.

    Monday, 01 February 2010 06:04 PM

    No democracy in Sri Lanka!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 06:05 PM

A NATIONAL GOVERNMENT IS THE FOREMOST SOLUTION TO THE BURNING ISSUES OF HUMAN CONFLICT, OF OUR NATION!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 06:05 PM

This is why Sri Lanka will always be a 'Third World Country'! We are not very far from Zimbabwe or Burma!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 06:59 PM

Where were you'll when the priest got killed in Nawalapitiya?

    Monday, 01 February 2010 07:35 PM

The prison will be filled by the opposition! We call this DEMOCRACY!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 08:29 PM

The law of the land says no "pelapali" or political gatherings within 7 days of an election. It's applicable to all, including 'sore' losers. The opposition can go to the Supreme Court and challenge the election results, rather than 'play to the gallery'!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 09:51 PM

'7 days,' so that's why it's on Wednesday!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 11:01 PM

Peaceful protests, are 'part & parcel' of a democracy!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 11:16 PM

If democracy prevails in a country, you are allowed to protest!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 11:21 PM

The seven-day period is over. Now we protest for democracy!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 11:35 PM

    # Rafiq 2010-02, you seem to know nothing of democratic values. Dissension, is an integral part of any good democracy. Do we live in a democracy or not? - This should be the question on everyone's mind. It looks like all opposition, peaceful or otherwise, is being curtailed. Very soon we would be like Burma or Iran. Disgraceful, what is taking place in Sri Lanka; all our freedoms are being eroded and people like you are cheering the demise of our freedom!

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 12:26 AM

Vermin is ready with a club !

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:55 PM

Rafiq, with your type of attitude, no one will be able to have a free opinion, in time to come, because they will be accused of some sort of 'conspiracy' or another!

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 07:27 AM

THIS IS EXACTLY WHAT LASANTHA WICKRAMATUNGA PREDICTED IN HIS ARTICLE WHICH WAS PUBLISHED AFTER HIS DEATH. FOR PEOPLE WHO HAVE NOT READ IT, YOU COULD DO SO ON THE INTERNET.

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 01:34 PM

What very good cost of living increased by 200% or crimes increased by 300% shutting media freedom or Kidnap or Lost of GSP+ or Idi Ameen rules or what?
Why you fool your self? Are u Blind? or you never been to school. In few days you will put your comments against Government that is sure because no one can hide the true.

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 01:34 PM

Lasatha Wickrematunga we miss you so, so much,. I am sure a another 100 Lasantha's are in the making., MR and crowd get ready to run and hide.

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 01:36 PM

You better start worrying about your children now. They don't have good leaders to follow and may end up like them unless of course SF comes to power which is very LIKELY.

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 01:39 PM

iTS NOT discrupt the peace but to protect the democracy , weldone dear unpers

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 01:43 PM

    Dear Srilankans
stand up for your rights!! in a free society, you should be able to express your views, having a opposition is good, otherwise, we will be heading for dictatorship, and no one , no person own sri lanka it's belong to us, we fought for our freedom, we had great kings and statmans, and a brave soldiers, army, navy, airforce who fought for our country, and these people are treated like dirt, if you'll keep quite, sri lankans are digging their own grave!!! god bless sri lanka

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 02:37 PM

Disagree totally! We are now neck and neck with these two and even overtaken Iran since lst month. Government deserves to be thanked, indeed.

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 02:45 PM

Even by the govt.'s own self-embarrasing figures, opposition is 4 million people. You cannot just sweep them away. They have a right to be very grieved by the govt's injustices. Please don't let MR to rub salt into their wounds by asking them to join him. It's ok to join MR if then led by a decent, honest Sri Lankan like Gen. Fonseka. Certainly not otherwise.

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 03:05 PM

    Dear Sarath,
Since when you decided to stand-up for your rights. Careful this country is going to have a brand new democracy called IRBURMA. Yeah' toy will quite enjoy it.

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 03:09 PM

    Rafiq,
Where have you been all this time? Can we deceive foreign countries with protest marches? Hey man this is World Wide Web time. Learn something before you open your mouth. You look like a typical loser.

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 07:28 PM

7 days have gone - are they still worried about the so-called 'coup'? Why should they fear, if they have won by over 57%?

    Tuesday, 02 February 2010 10:08 PM

Only those that 'lick the boots' will survive now!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:13 PM

All Sri Lankans, Stand Up against corruption, Stand Up against suppression of free media, tomorrow could be too late. Try to educate our fools about what is on the way for them..

    Monday, 01 February 2010 03:42 PM

    Stand-up for your Rights !.
    Don't give-up the fight !

    Monday, 01 February 2010 03:50 PM

    Fonseka Phobia !.

    Monday, 01 February 2010 04:21 PM

Wot, are they trying to create another Iran? Just get used to constant defeat UNP!!!!!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 04:22 PM

Threatened!! and fearful. This is not Burma, Iran even though they are our only friends. Democracy is much needed in our country

    Monday, 01 February 2010 04:47 PM

What else the LOSERS can do? Defeat after defeat, blame the Computers, State Media, Police,...., and protest after protest until the next DEFEAT.

    Monday, 01 February 2010 04:47 PM

Human Rights, Democracy blatently shattered!!! It is a human right to protest and voice ones opinion. This is why we are going to lose GSP+

    Monday, 01 February 2010 04:58 PM

Looks Mr. Rajapaksa has learnt some lessons from his buddy from Burma...

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:05 PM

When we do wrong we have to worry but when we won and the irragularities took place then fighting back is reasonable. We can't bow down for Tom & Harry hereafter..... lets fight for the right.

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:06 PM

    myanmar +,iran = sri lanka

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:09 PM

Question is whose friend is Iran (and not mention Burma, Lybia, China etc.)!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:09 PM

Hay Mann, its not a threat, its the fight for the right. You are conning. You know only a little, but we know the entire story of this victory.... tell your boss not to play the game with Generals.

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:12 PM

Mahinda on the foot steps of IRANI president............SUBA ANGATHAYAK......God Bless Sri Lanka !!!!!!!!!!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 03:14 PM

Very good and re-assuring words from the Police department. The opposition is simply having protest marches to deceive the international countries. As they have been humiliated in the last election the opposition must find other ways of passing away time. The opposition should try and find out the reasons for their loss. Once they find out SF is the reason for their loss then they should replace him and get on with life. These protest marches are illegal and every Sri Lankan would like to see these people face charges if they try to inconvenience and public and break law and order.

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:13 PM

why government is fearing soo much if the election results dont have any secrects??

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:14 PM

As they say all you need is a bottel of arrack & a bath parcel to get us give up our rights.

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:17 PM

Paranoia settles in eh? What ever is good for the government is good for opposition as well. That's what is called democracy. Over to you Mr IGP

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:24 PM

KEEP DEMOCRACY CONTINUSLY IN SRILANKA .I THINK OPPOSITION WILL DO BEST .WISHEs

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:27 PM

MR please explain to the citizens of Sri Lankans what is the definition of Democracy?

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:29 PM

Losers are not coconut pluckers mann,... mind it. We are not keeping flowers on the ears neither we are not logs... we too have blood and flesh mind it.

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:32 PM

At the first instance, please repeat who won and who lost. While repeating your lips might shiver.

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:45 PM

This is what happens when you wait too long!

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:46 PM

Wait and see what will happen in due course.

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:48 PM

Who is the loser and who is the winner, according to your own conscience?

    Monday, 01 February 2010 05:51 PM

I say, in the history of SriLanka has the 'Police' ever beaten the 'Army'? Ha!
