All the laws and regulations only for the ordinary people.Government supporters can do any damn thing.

Just Another Citizen Tuesday, 24 July 2012 07:48 AM

Isn't this like the 3rd time for the year they have said they will crack down on jaywalkers? They will do it for a few weeks & then stop. I have seen people crossing the road without using the yellow lines while a policemen has been present, & they haven't been booked.

    USAGUY Tuesday, 24 July 2012 04:09 AM

Oh ya really ??? This is just another absured step taken by the cops. First of all you need to make the roads safer for people towalk. Where are the sidewalks ? How about the drivers who do not stop at the crossings even when they see a pedestrian trying to cross ? How about the drivers who park vehicles at crossing, on side walks and many other areas prohibited. Those are the culprits not the poor pedestrian. Open your eyes Mr.policeman.

    SADA Tuesday, 24 July 2012 12:25 PM

O.K. HOW ABOUT THE RECLESS MOTORISTS WHO WON'T STOP AT ZEBRA CROSSINGS FOR PEDESTRIANS
TO CROSS THE ROAD. POLICE SHOULD TAKE LEGAL ACTION FOR CARELESS MOTORISTS TOO.LAW IS EQUAL
    TO EVERYBODY.

Amarathunga Chandika Tuesday, 24 July 2012 04:28 AM

May be IGP has no important matters to attend and very concerned about the Jaywalkers. All jokers are in one bunch.

    Nodrog Tuesday, 24 July 2012 04:21 AM

A welcome move. Please also nab the 2 and 3 wheelers who creep between traffic, knocking side mirrors etc, at the traffic lights.

Jayantha Jayamanne Tuesday, 24 July 2012 04:30 AM

Is the law not applicable for ruling party politicians?

sri lankan Tuesday, 24 July 2012 04:32 AM

    Good move

    #Sim Tuesday, 24 July 2012 08:29 AM

Why dont you start with Private Buses? they stop any where they want, racing against each other, over loading and wasting time in bus halts.

    BANDA Tuesday, 24 July 2012 08:51 AM

    ANOTHER FAKE STUFF BY POLICE

    KINGASANGA Tuesday, 24 July 2012 04:36 AM

He, USAGUY, come here and see why you can't walk here.

police must implement this law. road ethics & disciplined you can't expect from motorist only.

John Fernandez Tuesday, 24 July 2012 09:04 AM

Pavement becomes the road for motorcyclists in Katubedda area after 5.pm. Pedestrians cannot walk but they should fly above the ground when it happens. You don't need pedestrian crossings in that area.

Ravi Seneviratne Tuesday, 24 July 2012 09:06 AM

This law is appicable for only general public, when a politikka cross the road ( no matter where) Cops also will follow him.

    balu Tuesday, 24 July 2012 04:54 AM

    set up pavements first lol

    lasantha Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:04 AM

For godsake please implement and dont stop halfway through somebody's influance.

    Jehan Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:06 AM

Good Move this will help to create a disciplined civil society. and ease traffic and will relieve the stress of drivers whilst reducing cross walkers risk however before implementing this there should be sufficient pedestrian crossings marked. and I have a suggestion before all of these have a flyover for pedestrians at Hospital square because the crossing marked from lipton circus to hospital never gives way to p[pedestrians and most of pedestrians are from outside Colombo and they are at a risk of getting hit whilst coming to visit their patients.

Al Rasa Tuesday, 24 July 2012 04:53 AM

USAGUY very correct. Thank your for the comments which was also in mind.

Sri Lanka Tuesday, 24 July 2012 04:54 AM

    wow

Sl citizen Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:03 AM

well said..first teach drivers to stop at crossing even one person is waiting to cross the road.

    LankanFellow1 Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:11 AM

Going to court for this offense is too much.. have spot fine...
    Waste of time...

    Hareesz Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:09 AM

This law applied in Kandy sometime back & now completely ignored. Similar to seat belts.

    ANTON Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:26 AM

This is one way of earning money rather than cracking down on other criminals.

    backstreetboy Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:42 AM

the same law should be all including the forces and vips

    Minister Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:28 AM

What is the difference between implementing a law and strictly implementing a law? (neethiya kriyathmaka kireema and neethiya akuratama kriyathmaka kireema) Is there anything like that mentioned in the law?

    dimuthu Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:43 AM

Pettah and Colombo fprt needs under ground crossings. Please develop before implimenting strict riles.

    teshan Tuesday, 24 July 2012 09:36 AM

Well USAGUy come to colombo the side walks are there.

El Bomba Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:46 AM

Good move by the cops. Pedestrians crossing streets every here and there are biggest causes for the breakdown of smooth flow of traffic.

    Sen Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:48 AM

The problem of developing countries is that people find every law as a hurdle though its for there own good. Probably because breaking law has always been part of day to day life and most consider a achievement ! The law is good.. but when you bring it on Jay-Walkers it should be implemented strict on motorists to stop at the crossing too. Different countries have different crossings.. some gives pedestrians priority and some give motorists.. these should be part of basic education and crossing law as a whole should be implemented to bring the trust in people of the system.

    ang Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:55 AM

that's sound good but first of all has to set up proper pavement and roads. Lot of vehicles has park on the pavement and passengers go middle of the road, So punish vehicle drivers who are parking on the pavement also.

    LongLeg Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:55 AM

why don't the police strictly implement laws for minesterial motorcades and private buses before going after harmless pedestrians?

AGAMAY URAA Wednesday, 25 July 2012 09:25 AM

Now people cant walk on the road also man.what a bout the ministers escorte which army and so called PSD drive like crazy .who is going to stop them...???

    Ram Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:51 AM

Pavements are only for pedestrians. Not for motorcyclists & three wheelers during rush hours.

Ruwan Fernando Tuesday, 24 July 2012 09:50 AM

Will police jeeps stop at pedestrian crossings for people to cross? My 4 year old son and I were once nearly knocked down by a speeding police jeep on the ped xing!!

    nalaka Tuesday, 24 July 2012 05:56 AM

Near the piththala handiya the police are crossing the road without using the pedestrian crossing

    ramkuumar Tuesday, 24 July 2012 06:15 AM

On Dharmarama Road, wellawatte, half a road way reserved for police vehicle parking for Fraud Bureau police station there. On other side narrow pavement A flack post planted by police on the middle of pavement in front of their station. On one day two lanes of the same road were packed with more than 20 police vehicles. Now whose is going to implement the law. Is the public only be punished in this so called democratic country. Al every barred crossing in front of police stations, the crossing were opened for police vehicles only.

    Prem Tuesday, 24 July 2012 06:06 AM

Government has no other way to earn money rather than imposing fines.

    MM Tuesday, 24 July 2012 06:24 AM

    Good move!
What will you do ministers use their cars and backup vehicals violate trafic law?
    May be you salut them.

    Manoj Tuesday, 24 July 2012 10:28 AM

pls implement the low strictly against rishard badurdeen - sudarman radaliyagoda and duminda silva please

    Pedestrian Tuesday, 24 July 2012 06:51 AM

LOL.....How many times 'POLICE' had already said this? For how long this will be 'Strictly Implemented'?

Andrew jebraj Tuesday, 24 July 2012 06:44 AM

Well well what about the VVIP vehicles knocking down people crossing on the zebra crossings, while traffice police on duty!!!!

    Dilan Tuesday, 24 July 2012 06:46 AM

    Bad move

    Cyclops Tuesday, 24 July 2012 07:03 AM

The police too cross the road at their will at any point. Just stand opposite the Mount Lavinia police station and watch them! But this is a good law and should be strictly adhered to by everyone. At the same time police should see that drivers stop when people are crossing or about to cross at the line.

    PS Tuesday, 24 July 2012 11:17 AM

Which world do you live in... Haven't you seen them re-laying all the pavements. Don't be so ignorant.

    ROBERT Tuesday, 24 July 2012 11:13 AM

WE also in colombo.... teshan you too come to HULFTSDROP st. BOC branch. Always some lawyers are parking their cars on the side walks(DO you need the vehicle NUMBERS???). here are LAWS but nobody even Lawyers and Police men also not following those.

    MARAVAN Tuesday, 24 July 2012 07:06 AM

This is within 20cases target or out of that

    perera Tuesday, 24 July 2012 07:16 AM

DONT WORRY ABOUT ALL THE SERIOUS CRIMES. OH YES ACCORDING TO GOTA THERE IS VERY LITTLE CRIME IN THE MIRACLE OF ASIA.
SO LET US GET THE LITTLE ONES WHO VIOLATE ROAD LAWS.

    Mervin Tuesday, 24 July 2012 07:31 AM

A good move. Please apply the same rule urgently in Kandy as this is the Esala Perahara season it is very essential that pedestrians strictly follow traffic rules as there will be mass movement of people and vehicles in the city in the coming days.
It is also essential to ban the use of mobile phones while moving or crossing on the public roads. It is common to see pedestrians even using mobile phones while crossing the road and do not seem to respond even to the tooting of the horn while crossing.

    Chandler Tuesday, 24 July 2012 07:35 AM

This damn good though what about the other laws.
