Police are to strictly implement the pedestrian laws and will take legal action against jaywalkers in Colombo from today, police spokesman SP Ajith Rohana said.

‘People who do not use pedestrian crossings, subways and fly-overs to cross roads in Colombo will be produced in court from today’, the spokesman said.

Isn't this like the 3rd time for the year they have said they will crack down on jaywalkers? They will do it for a few weeks & then stop. I have seen people crossing the road without using the yellow lines while a policemen has been present, & they haven't been booked.

The police too cross the road at their will at any point. Just stand opposite the Mount Lavinia police station and watch them! But this is a good law and should be strictly adhered to by everyone. At the same time police should see that drivers stop when people are crossing or about to cross at the line.

A good move. Please apply the same rule urgently in Kandy as this is the Esala Perahara season it is very essential that pedestrians strictly follow traffic rules as there will be mass movement of people and vehicles in the city in the coming days.
It is also essential to ban the use of mobile phones while moving or crossing on the public roads. It is common to see pedestrians even using mobile phones while crossing the road and do not seem to respond even to the tooting of the horn while crossing.

On Dharmarama Road, wellawatte, half a road way reserved for police vehicle parking for Fraud Bureau police station there. On other side narrow pavement A flack post planted by police on the middle of pavement in front of their station. On one day two lanes of the same road were packed with more than 20 police vehicles. Now whose is going to implement the law. Is the public only be punished in this so called democratic country. Al every barred crossing in front of police stations, the crossing were opened for police vehicles only.

Pavement becomes the road for motorcyclists in Katubedda area after 5.pm. Pedestrians cannot walk but they should fly above the ground when it happens. You don't need pedestrian crossings in that area.

WE also in colombo.... teshan you too come to HULFTSDROP st. BOC branch. Always some lawyers are parking their cars on the side walks(DO you need the vehicle NUMBERS???). here are LAWS but nobody even Lawyers and Police men also not following those.

Good Move this will help to create a disciplined civil society. and ease traffic and will relieve the stress of drivers whilst reducing cross walkers risk however before implementing this there should be sufficient pedestrian crossings marked. and I have a suggestion before all of these have a flyover for pedestrians at Hospital square because the crossing marked from lipton circus to hospital never gives way to p[pedestrians and most of pedestrians are from outside Colombo and they are at a risk of getting hit whilst coming to visit their patients.

Oh ya really ??? This is just another absured step taken by the cops. First of all you need to make the roads safer for people towalk. Where are the sidewalks ? How about the drivers who do not stop at the crossings even when they see a pedestrian trying to cross ? How about the drivers who park vehicles at crossing, on side walks and many other areas prohibited. Those are the culprits not the poor pedestrian. Open your eyes Mr.policeman.

The problem of developing countries is that people find every law as a hurdle though its for there own good. Probably because breaking law has always been part of day to day life and most consider a achievement ! The law is good.. but when you bring it on Jay-Walkers it should be implemented strict on motorists to stop at the crossing too. Different countries have different crossings.. some gives pedestrians priority and some give motorists.. these should be part of basic education and crossing law as a whole should be implemented to bring the trust in people of the system.

that's sound good but first of all has to set up proper pavement and roads. Lot of vehicles has park on the pavement and passengers go middle of the road, So punish vehicle drivers who are parking on the pavement also.
