A group of protesting university students clashed with the police opposite the University Grants Commission (UGC) at Ward Place in Colombo a short while ago after the students forced their way into the UGC premises.

The students from the Peradeniya University had made their way to Colombo on board several buses to stage a protest in Colombo over several demands but faced resistance from the police.

The students however made their way to Ward Place and forced their way into the UGC premises after clashing with the police. (Daily Mirror online)

The whole problem is that todays University Students do not know how to get the best out of even a bad system which is offered free.
They are unable to think independantly. That is the result of these strikes, satyagraha ect.,
They fail to GOSL invest in their education. After graduating they need to create avenues for themselves & to move on. GOSL is not their to provide employment as well.
Its about creativity self confidence

Free educations…please try to get maximum without wasting your time and your parents hard earning money. Of course there are few they don’t want to do and not let others to do. It is hard to find any university in even the first world countries offer free education for such a standard courses.

totally agreed. when i was a first year student of Peradeniya we were asked to take part in a protest against govt and UGC, and as usual non of us were told the reasons. a few of us did manage to escape, but that was soon to be followed by union leaders coming to us and asking as to why we didn't go. soon we felt i would've been better to get beaten up by the police than having to answer to JVP thugs.

..., so only the elite who are able to pay will earn degrees and go to higher positions, and the sons of the poor can go pluck coconuts and daughters of poor can work as house maids for the elite.

i believe this is the very reason behind these student movements. after reading these remarks i think it is very much likely that unknowing to the students, JVP is forcing them into these think with the hope of getting the government to abolish free education.

It's high time to maintain the discipline in Sri Lankan universities. There are lot of A/L students who are deprived of university education due to limited resources. However majority of students who enter the universities do not study; they do politics in universities. Higher Education Ministry, UGC and University authorities should collectively tackle this menace without further delay in order to maintain strict discipline in universities. Follow the rule: Study or Leave!

Before opening up the faculty of Allied Health these jokers protested against it, accusing that the government tries to degrade the quality of the MBBS. Then protested against a delaying occurred in accommodating the new student group following a court order. When everything has settled, now they have found another reason to protest.. Funny. My advice to police is, please neglect their acts as long as possible, because their intention is to get the attention by such incidents.

the best solution is , not waste the tax payers money anymore...gov should re consider giving free education..only a very few country's give free education and still these idiots don't make use of it..if you have to pay for your studies all this nonsense would stop .no one is going to waste their time on the streets when they have to pay for it.

I was impressed by the understanding of the needs of students shown by the new Minister of Higher Education. He has to take firm action to address the issues that affect the quality and employability of graduates produced by our universities. Tackling the indoctrination of new entrants through ragging and firm action against the thugs witnessed by the public at the Kelaniya University should be priorities.

The simply reducing to 3 years cause to lose the chance for higher education, going abrod other thing is within three its difficult to master in very important profession which is dealing with the healthy life of people. BY the way Sri Lanka and Sri Lankan will go forward very slowely because of politics.

These politically motivated jokers should be suspended and banned from entering any University premises. Let them not disrupt the academic studies of the majority of students who are innocent but intimidated by these scoundrels. If the students have any genuine grievances let them put these down in writing and send them to the relevant authorities who can be monitored by the Presidential Secretariat.

These are not students, but unlawful Thugs and Goons of vested interests. These students never do what they are supposed to do in the universities. simply dismiss them from the universities and take stern legal action as any other citizen of the country. there are enough bright students waiting to get campus entrance. Also they are wasting the Taxpayers funds.

Suspend these students - and ban them from further studies in the universities as education is free. I cannot understand why they enter university and how they find the time to engage in violence. By such acts, even genuine students who are really keen on completing their graduate studies are deprived when the unis close because of violence. Added to this, such students are the very ones who demand that they be employed after gradation. NOWHERE IN THE WORLD DOES THE GOVERNMENT PROVIDE EMPLOYMENT FOR GRADUATES PASSING OUT OF THE UNIVERSITIES.

People may think that Uni Students have gone mad..But the reality is there are many problems in universities.All rulers are scolding at students but they never tried give solutions to those problems.Many people do not have an idea about how university is running and how should be running even for the government .Government has deducted funds to all universities and students have many many problems regarding careers.Before Start private universities,the government should bring the srilankan universities to a global standard and should provided necessary resources and background. This is time to change the whole education system in Sri Lanka.Otherwise it will effect to the whole country and economy

University teaching is a crap in Srilanka. It is not market oriented. There are several fields related to economy do not have any departments. But Arts is the still accommodating more than 65% of students. Except science streams , the rest is real problem to peace of the country!

Quite sometimes the university students are out of control. Nothing has done about this so far. There is a minister for Higher education and so many ministers came and gone without solving this problem. Maybe the demonstraion is for a fair cause but they way they are doing it is wrong. Must put a fullstop to it once and for all. They are still students and they get free education. Should we remind them that?
