The government has decided to assign Parliament the task of drafting a political solution to the North-East crisis, informed government sources said yesterday.

It is learnt that President Mahinda Rajapaksa would make a request to the Speaker to appoint an All-Party Select Committee within this week to proceed with the task.

Several political leaders including Minister Douglas Devananda who attached to the government have suggested the government to prepare a political solution for the north east problem through a Parliament select committee.

Sources also confirmed that this matter was discussed further by the President and government allies at the Parliament Complex last Friday before arriving at the decision.

It is also reported that the government has decided to  have the political solution prepared by the Parliament Select Committee within a limited time frame which will be implemented after the approval by Parliament. (Ranjith Ananda Jayasinghe)

Then what APRC under Tissa Witharana appointed for? Where is that report and what are its recomendations? Absolutely nothing can be expected from this new select committee which is another Rajapakse tradition to circumvent justice to Jaffna tamils.

Ah, another committee to have a sitting, do a deliberation, make a report and finally to drop the matter!

What we are dealing with here is a national problem of enormous significance for the resolution of which all political parties should invariably make a contribution and reach consensus. The current proposal for a Parliamentary Select Committee to formulate a solution in that regard is undoubtedly a wise and appropriate approach. As peace loving people let us hope this will yield results.

    DN Tuesday, 14 June 2011 02:50 AM

Good move. But it is very much doubt our politician can come to agreement on this issue. It has to do within a time frame. Otherwise it will be just killing time & wasting public funds. All party conference also did the same.

    Powerless Tuesday, 14 June 2011 02:39 AM

Keep dragging it till the next election, and repeat the process. By induction, there will be no pilical solution in Lanka.
