One killed in four-wheel rally tragedy

A 20-year-old youth was killed during a mishap at a four-by-four motor race in the Ovitiyawatta area in Wennappuwa a short while ago. Police said a cable had broken when a jeep was to be taken out of the track after completing its race.

The jeep had then run over the victim and another person. A senior police officer said that a specific time period was given to complete the race. “ If the vehicle fails, it has to stop at the point where it was and then the jeep can only be pulled out of the track,” he said.

During this process the cable had broken resulting in the death of the 20 year old youth who had come to witness the race. (Supun Dias)

As I know 2 people have already died from this accident. Both are very young and both from Panadura area. May they attend nibbana :( :(

There is no excuse, the careless driver of the jeep has to be taken into custody. All the drivers who participates in races should be given a basic training under on race regulations in the future and any such accidents on this nature is not acceptable.

what a tragedy. We do understand that events of this nature should also be there. It is also important. We have to ensure however that the safety of all spectators are paramount too.

when the spectators come close to get a closer glimpse, these sort of things happen. snapping a cable is most common in these 4 x4 races. hard luck on the youth.

Are there regularized safety standards on public roads?? Do buses stop at railway crossings or have they taken out railway crossings altogether?
