Underworld clash in Maligawatte



A tense situation prevailed at Apple-watta in Maligawatta this morning after a clash among two gangs left three people including a policeman and an underworld gangster’s brother injured, police said.

Reports said two lorries had been set on fire and several three wheelers and motorbikes damaged during the clash which took place at about 1.00 a.m. when an armed group stormed the house of the underworld leader but he was not in the house at the time.

His brother was shot as he opened the door. Police said they believed that a longstanding personal dispute might have resulted in the shooting.

The injured were rushed to the Colombo National Hospital by residents with some of whom were closely associated with the underworld leader going berserk.

A police constable was injured when he had attempted to calm down the angry crowds that pelted stones at vehicles parked in the area.

The Special Task Force (STF) and the Army was deployed in the area following the incident to assist the police in maintaining law and order.

Police spokesman Ajith Rohana said a man who was seriously has been warded at the Intensive Care Unit of the National Hospital.

He said no arrests had being made so far while the Maligawatta police assisted by the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) are investigating.

Police said the underworld figure who was targeted by the rival gang had not returned home.  (Supun Dias)
