Three Northants players are heading off for a winter training trip to Sri Lanka at their own expense.

Batsmen Stephen Peters and Ben Howgego and wicketkeeper David Murphy will meet up there with the club's overseas player Chaminda Vaas.

The former Sri Lanka international has helped to organise accommodation and bowlers for the net sessions.

"I'm sure this will be a very good opportunity for them," said Northants head coach David Capel.

"When a trip like this is properly thought out and organised I think it offers the players a boost.

"For them to train and work on their techniques - especially against spin - is great, and I would advocate this kind of trip to others. They go with our full support."

Vaas, who played 111 Tests and 321 one-day internationals, was Northants' leading bowler in the County Championship last summer, claiming 70 wickets.

"Chaminda has been brilliant in helping us with this trip," commented Murphy.

"I'm sure it'll play a big part in my development and future progress." (Source: BBC)
