The government yesterday agreed to allow the debate on the no-confidence motion against Finance Minister Ravi Karunanayake on July 4, but the opposition insisted that it should be taken up next week.

Mahajana Eksath Peramuna ( MEP) Leader Dinesh Gunawardane asked Mr. Karunanayake whether he was ready for it. However, House Leader Lakshman Kiriella said July 4 was the day decided by the government.

Mr. Gunawardane said the opposition would not allow the government to act in its own way. Mr. Kiriella said the government would not give into the opposition in this respect. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
