The government has completed the ground work for the introduction of a new electoral system to elect members to local government bodies, Deputy Minister Indika Bandaranayake said in Parliament today.
Mr. Bandaranayake who is the Deputy Minister of Local Governments and Provincial Councils said that the new electoral system would be enacted next year sorting out problems encountered in the present system.
He said that adequate financial allocations are made to local government members to carry out regional development work.
“Sometimes, they get more money than the MPs,” he said.
He said that steps had also been taken to provide more facilities to local government members to discharge their duties in their respective areas. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)
Crux of the matter is the LG members get more money then MPs. So it has to be rectified urgently

This new system works better only for the ruling party so that they can win whatever election. Are funds for goons also included which are assaulting the ooposition parties and damaging their houses and election offices??

This is far too late after the local government election system has been ruined by the introduction of party politics, and proportionate representation into it. Local government should never had party politics as their mandate have nothing to do with national and part issues.
