Opposition UNP Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today said that those who negotiated for the release of former Army Commander Sarath Fonseka should be held responsible for the failure to secure a full pardon with his civic rights intact.

He told a function at party headquarters ‘Sirikotha’, that those who negotiated with the government should explain to the nation the real situation.
Speaking during the ceremony to mark the handing over of appointment letters to office-bearers of the Association of Former UNP Provincial Council Members, Mr. Wickremesinghe said those who negotiated with the government to get the former army commander released should explain to the nation the real situation with regard to Mr. Fonseka’s civic rights.

“The nation had been hoodwinked as Mr. Fonseka has got only a relief by way of a reduced prison term,” Mr. Wickremesinghe said
He said those who negotiated with the government should explain the real situation as they had already said that Fonseka was being released unconditionally.

Mr. Wickremesinghe also sought the fullest cooperation of all UNP members to take on the government in the future.(Yohan Perera)

Unconditional release means; 'Get out of that cell as you are', (without civic rights). How gullible are we !! Tragically, Mrs. Fonseka was the first to be duped by things she was told.

What Ranil W says may be correct, (It usually is). Unfortunately he always says it at the wrong time and in the wrong context and only manages to antagonize everyone.

It is a Tragedy that Some people do not understand what he is trying to say. As Always. It is not he who is at fault it is us who cannot understand what he is trying to say.

    Lakshan Thursday, 24 May 2012 04:06 PM

I think you need to understand the mentality of the Sri Lankan people before opening your mouth. Things you say maybe right in the context of certain cultures (most probably western =>Specially UK culture) but in Sri Lanka people just see you as an imbecile. This is why your political career has been heading downhill and along the way your taking the UNP with you as well.

    Cyril Thursday, 24 May 2012 04:11 PM

    Dear Ranil
The others did something at list what did you do all talk.
You should explain to the nation what you have done.

Prof Hemantha Wickra Friday, 25 May 2012 05:45 AM

You could have done a better job..

Ben Hurling Thursday, 24 May 2012 04:29 PM

UNP leadership a life time appointment?

No modern democracy can function with this kind of disfunctional political parties.

Personal glory and postions are bigger than Sri Lanka's interests?

Sri Lanka is cursed with SLFP & UNP politicians.

    tom Thursday, 24 May 2012 04:34 PM

woooooow what a crowd behind ranil...

    Zscore Friday, 25 May 2012 06:49 AM

Quite right.. but even our voes cannot bring about change as even the voting process is corrupted.

    heshan Thursday, 24 May 2012 08:43 PM

he has a point. please watch the video. he is only accusing the media for not providing all the information to the public.

John Fernandez Thursday, 24 May 2012 09:52 PM

What Ranil says is absolutely true. If Fonseka served the full term this situation could have been avoided.

    dasa Thursday, 24 May 2012 09:49 PM

Ranil you are the best.. but people can't understand that !

buffaloa citizen Friday, 25 May 2012 07:15 AM

    Beacuse they are like me.

    AJ Thursday, 24 May 2012 10:49 PM

True that, I'm not taking any political sides. But isn't it the same UNP that took away the civil rights of late Mrs. Bandaranayake?

Cuthbert Seneveratne Thursday, 24 May 2012 11:12 PM

There is longitude in what Ranil say

    kiribath Thursday, 24 May 2012 11:41 PM

    form the new party soon.

    kiribath Thursday, 24 May 2012 11:47 PM

its very interesting to see , how UNP under this man in 25 years time.

saman kumara Thursday, 24 May 2012 11:59 PM

when some people understand the value of Ranil, it will be too late.

Independent Observer Friday, 25 May 2012 12:20 AM

    Ok !, Ok,!
Now you step in and do what the negotiators could not do !!

    Robbie Friday, 25 May 2012 12:20 AM

What he says is correct. The analysis is that no civic rights , means no political involvement, leave alone a new party, if he supports another party - the party he supports could be in strife legally for soliciting his support. The heat will wither, MR played it well as usual, opposition cannot do much with small nos in the parliament, no matter who says what. Use your votes with diligence. That is the only time the public could speak, other than that we are mere spectators until we are counted.

    Nodrog Friday, 25 May 2012 12:22 AM

It's always easy to find faults after somethings done. If Ranil felt he could have done a better job then he should have negotiated.
