Nuwara Eliya experienced extreme cold weather recording a low of 2.7 degrees Celsius early last morning with ground frost formation, the Meteorological Department said today.
However, Deputy Director M.D. Dayanada said the cold weather in the district was not something extraordinary as it was an annual occurrence mainly in January. The cold weather will persist for another three to four days, he stressed.
He hopes that the situation will improve by today and the temperature in Nuwara-Eliya may rise to about 4 degrees Celsius in the next couple of days.
Mr. Dayananda said the current extreme cold weather is prevalent only in Nuwara Eliya in the Central Province and added the lowest recorded temperature in the district was reported on July 30, 1914. with the temperature being -3.7 degrees Celsius
Normally during this period the country will experience dry weather except for occasional showers in the North-East for the next few weeks he said.
Meanwhile, additional District Secretary, Nuwara-Eliya, U.W.D.U.M.A Amarasekara said vegetable cultivation has been affected due to the ground frost.
She added that farmers have found it difficult to carry out their routine work at their farms and specially in the open due to the chilly weather. (Sandun A. Jayasekera)

Everyone in Sri lanka has to adapt to the climate changes taking place even in Colombo. We need to dress warmly especially children to prevent chest problems. I guess we will have to buy a cardigan or sweater during the month of January

Some nice humorous commentsts above.
But seriously its time to get ready to face adverse climatic conditions. Proper roofing, heating system etc to be introduced at lesser cost to save lives in future, who knows next year it might reach feezing point, 2.7 is not so far from it.

Spare a thought for the beggers and anyother people (specially kids) who sleep on streets and do not have proper houses or clothes to keep warm....sadly nobody will report if there are deaths to these people from hypothermia....
Wara Monday, 16 January 2012 04:55 AM
Don't want temperature to become normal.
