Mervyn’s sathyakriyawa against animal sacrifice

Public Relations Minister Mervyn Silva said yesterday he would perform a ‘sathyakriyawa at the Muneswaram Kali Kovil on September 1 to prevent animal sacrifice

He told a news conference that last year too he had intervened and prevented the slaughter of animals.

“I have received information that the Kovil priests are planning to sacrifice animals this year too. I tried to talk with the priests and stop them from doing it but they say that according to their religion they have permission to do it and that they will somehow go through with this. Priests have no right to talk like that and neither do I. Whether it is Hinduism or in any other religion, killing is not encouraged.  So I invite all those who are against the killing of animals to join me in the morning to perform a ‘sathyakriyawa,” the minister said.

He said the Kovil priests had dashed coconuts and chanted waskavi against me but none of that affected me.

“As long as I am correct, no dashing of coconuts or chanting waskavi can hurt me. Kali Amman that I know and worship will never support animal sacrifice. I have been visiting the Kali Kovil for the past 40 years and I have her support and blessing for whatever I do. And I will not let anybody act according to their foul agendas in this country as long as I live,” he said.

However when journalists asked him what action he would take if the priests went ahead with the sacrifice, the minister said he was not somebody who would get into a swimming suit long before he came near the water.(By Jayashika Padmasiri)

Sri Lanka is still in the stone age.

    Saman Saturday, 25 August 2012 07:41 PM

He loves animals becuase he feels and act like them most of the time.

Hiran Miskin Saturday, 25 August 2012 09:49 PM

Kovil priests may argue that animal sacrifice is no crueler than slaughtering animals for food. They would say that the procedure for slaughtering livestock for sacrificial purposes is the same as the procedure used for slaughtering animals for food. But it is high time that we stand up to and stop this tradition of theirs and make them catch up with the civilized world if we have to.

    Lankan Saturday, 25 August 2012 11:09 PM

This time I am with you! Let them go to India and do their sacrifice. In the mean time there are many other important issues to be solved in Sri Lanka such as corruption, human killings, thuggery, rape etc etc.

Mervyn, Now that you have experience in tying government officials to trees who do not do their job right or do not listen to you, I suggest that you tie the priests in Munneshwaram kovil to a mango tree if they try to sacrifice any animal on that sacred premises.Chilaw police will help you.Do not forget to take your friends(thugs) with you when you try do this or the priest might accidenlty sacrife you as you look like a goat.

Dear Friends, let me clarify Hinduism never admits killing of animals. Those who practice the killing are not Hindus. Hinduism and Buddhism are fundamental principles are same. so Mr Mervin, this time your correct

    RajasH Saturday, 25 August 2012 06:02 PM

The Chairmen of SEC Resigned amid corruption, universities closed indefinitely, crime rate on the up. cost of living on the up and this guy wants us to bother about animal sacrifice at a Hindu Temple.

    or is this a diversion?

    ruradhee Monday, 27 August 2012 07:18 AM

No no, minister won't do, otherwise he will lose the Malu Market side income!!!

    kan Monday, 27 August 2012 08:11 AM

Stop killing of animals is agreed, but can you prevent killings of human beings by fellow human beings? First you do the later then we will support you for former.

    Tash Saturday, 15 September 2012 06:23 AM

I respect Mervyn for what he is doing - at least he is doing something unlike you rahu, who is just critisising another persons good deed, yet you sit on your butt and do nothing. if you care so much about the rape and killing - you go out there and do something. but dont critisise mervyn for standing up against the devil worship happening at munneshwaram.

    Tash Saturday, 15 September 2012 06:27 AM

Everyone has the right to practice a religion - BUT NOT THE RIGHT TO KILL ANOTHER INNOCENT LIFE - when killing is involved - thats where freedom STOPS - go and educate yourself a little before opening your mouth fair and square - do you honestly think any "God" wants slaughter and blood....and if their God wants blood so badly - why dont they kill themselves and their babies without slaughtering an innocent life?? If this means war must begin - then let it be - We MUST fight against evil at all costs...

    Tash Saturday, 15 September 2012 06:27 AM

maybe - but he is still doing something - unlike most of you..whatever his reasons are, I dont care..

    Tash Saturday, 15 September 2012 06:28 AM

at least he cares about something - what have you done about the humans? nothing? then dont talk....

    Tash Saturday, 15 September 2012 06:29 AM

YES you must bother about them - because they are wrong - if everyone keeps their mouths shut like cowards nothing will happen...

    Tash Saturday, 15 September 2012 06:30 AM

    The fool named Nari Sabry?

    silva Saturday, 25 August 2012 07:35 AM

Why not a satyagraha against drugs ?

    Sarneris Saturday, 25 August 2012 06:07 AM

Respected Dr. Silva should consider sathyagraha at fisheries harbors where thousands or millions of innocent fish lives are killed every day.

Start from the highest numbers Dr. Silva.

    Fair N Square Saturday, 25 August 2012 09:15 AM

One war ended after almost 30 years. He is starting a war NOT ONLY against Tamils but also against Muslims. Tee freedom of religion FOR ALL races has been there even before Dr was born. Do the Tamils and Muslim stop him from practicing his religion I wonder. I heard the president say sometime back, that this is a Multi Ethnic and multi cultural country..

Sadly we forget the fact that Even Buddhism was " Imported" from India. Somebody tell me where Our Lord Buddha came from? and if he was Born in SL? Why these cheap shots are taken by ministers., I do not know, Let them practice their religion and we practice ours. Do not let this be a tool for the NGO's to voice against SL at international forums..

    Nero Saturday, 25 August 2012 03:19 PM

There was a lot of negative comments when a man lost his life trying to rescue a cat who had fallen into a well. This is a real animal lover. As for Mervyn he is just doing it for publicity. Think.

    ceylon Saturday, 25 August 2012 03:43 PM

He does not care daily human life crimes but the animals.

Madhawa Perera Saturday, 25 August 2012 05:00 PM
