Deputy Minister of Highways Mervyn Silva said he would not let any dengue deaths occur in Kelaniya after August 1st and if a death does occur, officials of the relevant authorities will be tied to a tree as punishment.

Speaking at a media briefing Deputy Minister Mervyn Silva said that he would take measures to tie the members of the Pradeshiya sabha, health officials, grama niladari officials and samurdhi officials to a tree located close to the dengue victim’s house.

He said that measures should be taken to clear all areas by August 1 and officials shouldn’t be afraid to nab offenders who throw dirt on to the road.

“Even if hotels have our photographs don’t be afraid to check these places. If someone comes to throw dirt they will leave the place only with a scar,” he said.

When I was wondering why Mervyn, the Ball Tamperer, is not in the news for quite a while, here he comes with something sensational. He knows how to catch attention

    polwansa Wednesday, 28 July 2010 09:06 PM

Why doesn't the government use the Army to clear the garbage from every district in the country? Dengue cannot be controlled by a few health officers alone. A huge amount of manpower is needed and the Army can do this - to save more lives! In fact, dengue control should be brought under the Defence Ministry!

    Jay Wednesday, 28 July 2010 07:53 PM

People get what they voted for ...

    Invictusrilankan Thursday, 29 July 2010 07:04 AM

This guy really is quite a character. Since he is from a village most people find his ways very unconventional but I think at the end of the day he is just like any other politician trying to make a buck, increase their power and of course do something for the public in the process as well. Everybody calls him a joker but sometimes I feel that his intentions are simple direct. The Trees it shall be Dr. Silva.

    bernard Thursday, 29 July 2010 06:52 AM

He said he would resign his Kelaniya seat if Sarath Fonseka's DNA party wins one single seat. He is still here.
    Joker of jokers!!!!

Viv Suriya Wednesday, 28 July 2010 06:46 PM

Can't he tie-up mosquitoes to trees, instead?

    suwimal Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:20 AM

With his claim for direct descent from Dutugamunu, he could not take the credit for ltte's demise. This may be a vicarious way for getting consolation, at least for demise of dengue.

Top Sri Lankan Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:14 AM

I am never a FAN of him, I always thought he was a joker , But i feel he means it this time and i think he has already started to work on it , i mean to clean the kelaniya area. Just the Right time for him to clear up all the mess he made in the past.

Lanke Banda Thursday, 29 July 2010 05:04 AM
