Maligawatta shooting - suspects still at large



The Colombo Crime Division (CCD) has intensified its search for the suspects involved in the shooting incident in the Apple-watta area in Maligawatta last Tuesday (January 3) which resulted in the death of a person who is the brother of a prominent underworld figure.

The victim Mohammed Rasuldeen succumbed to his injuries on Saturday while receiving treatment at the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) of the Colombo National Hospital. He was placed on life support. Two others were injured during the shooting.

Police media spokesman Ajith Rohana said that the suspects involved in damaging vehicles and properties after the shooting incident have already been identified but the weapons and the suspects involved in the shooting incident are yet to be established.

Police said that the underworld figure who was targeted by the rival gang had also not returned home.
 
A number of vehicles mainly trishaws and motorbikes had been set on fire and a number of three wheelers and motorbikes had also been damaged following the clash, reports from the area said.

The incident took place at around 1.00am when an armed group stormed into the house of an underworld figure. The door had been opened by the brother of the underworld leader, who was not present inside and his brother was shot by the armed group.

A police constable was injured when they had gone to control the angry crowds that pelted stones at vehicles parked in the area. (Supun Dias)
