Maligakanda prison break



A group of 11 suspects who were held under special custody in a temporary cell at the Maligakanda Magistrate’s court escaped this afternoon. However one suspect was arrested minutes later.

Prisons Commissioner Major General V.R De Silva said that the suspects had escaped by breaking open the cell.

The suspects had been kept in the cell till the prison bus arrived. He said that 18 suspects who were held for various criminal charges were brought to the courts from the Welikda Prison today.

“As I have leaned they managed to escape due to the fault of the prisons officers who were on duty. We have informed the police to track and arrest the suspects”, Major General De Silva said. (SD)
