The United People’s Freedom Alliance led by President Mahinda Rajapaksa has won all three provincial councils –North Central, Eastern and Sabaragamuwa - at Saturday’s Provincial Council election.
The UPFA was able to win all the three Provincial Councils obtaining 51.05 per cent of the total votes and securing 63 seats. The main opposition UNP obtained 27.67 per cent, TNA obtained 9.63 per cent and the SLMC 6.46 per cent.
Significantly, the UPFA won 14 seats in the Eastern Provincial Council, while the Tamil National Alliance secured 11.

When defeated, disappointed parties make various theories to undermine the people's victories. However, the truth is that the people in these three provinces have given the UPFA led by President Mahindha Rajapakse a clear mandate.
SL Sunday, 09 September 2012 02:53 PM
Will get 5% more votes and that won't even make a bit of a difference.
Gayan Sunday, 09 September 2012 03:28 PM
A good lesson for the racist parties like TNA and their Dispora supporters.
SL Sunday, 09 September 2012 03:22 PM
What is your basis for counting malpractices? Just few days ago (Awa)Mangala himself said that there were no "Gilmart"

Apart from the readers here, majority of the country are with the government.
Lanka Sunday, 09 September 2012 10:37 PM
This is what happens when we have such a "week" opposition. You need a change then strengthen the opposition.......simple as that people!!
ceylon Sunday, 09 September 2012 11:23 PM
The results indicate majority of Sri Lankans are not concerned about the daily crimes, corruption, law and order. Good luck !
dcold Sunday, 09 September 2012 03:00 PM
So if counting was correct, UNP should have won?
Are you on drugs or something!
Fact is there was no significant election violence. All parties were presence at counting. So fact is UPFA won it. If you don't like it then better to to make people rally around it and change next time
No pint blaming the winner
gamarala Monday, 10 September 2012 12:39 AM
Once upon a time there were fair and free elections, now with all the computer jilmarts you can be victorious forever...
Dr. Who Monday, 10 September 2012 01:23 AM
I must say that at least SL has the freedom to write negative comments openly. Let's see what will happen in the future. I think Ranil is a "Nice person", but a bad politician. He cannot relate to the masses. He will never be a President in the future. I would never trust SF , I can't understand why anyone would trust a traitor.

Ha Ha Ha Monday, 10 September 2012 02:56 AM
What a good decision by the majority voters , Education in a mess , that is our future and our own children , corruption from grass root level , and many more , but we want UPFA , Hurrah

The results indicate the extent of political maturity of today's Sri Lankans. The indicators: non voting % and voting pattern itself. Could this be another result of Executive Presidency? I wonder.
Wonderworld Tuesday, 11 September 2012 09:28 AM
What a fun! You can't call it a big victory for UPFA, after utilizing so much of Govt. funds for this purpose. We shoud call it a big defeat.
dasdas Sunday, 09 September 2012 12:15 PM
we all knew that these guys gonna win.. if its a clean election other side would have won !
Spartacus Sunday, 09 September 2012 09:13 AM
This shows that at grass root level Ranil is not accepted. He has to realize this fact. Ranil was celebrating the 60th anniversary of the party in Colombo while the election campaign was in full swing. What a moron he is. This to go man, time to go.
Spartacus Sunday, 09 September 2012 09:15 AM
The General will be having the best laugh of his life. What would have been the result had be campaigned for the UNP.
samosa Sunday, 09 September 2012 09:14 AM
do we need elections? because we all know what's the result before it comes out :)
Fazal Sunday, 09 September 2012 09:31 AM
Well said Sue, we are a bunch of fools as always.
Asoka Sunday, 09 September 2012 09:25 AM
Sue, ..Come on.. People have spoken.. Accept the reality. We cannot have elections until we find a result you like..Now the campaign is over. Governing Time..
Game Kolla Sunday, 09 September 2012 09:27 AM
All because we have a weak opposition...not that we have a strong government.
Dammika Sunday, 09 September 2012 09:44 AM
We knew the results even before announcing ... I mean all. If the counting was pure and clean results would be differnt
Prof Wickramatillake Sunday, 09 September 2012 10:29 AM
Congratulations Mr Wickramasinghe, for making UPFA win for the infinite no of times
Ahmad Sunday, 09 September 2012 11:45 AM
Did UPFA win in East?
Nazir Sunday, 09 September 2012 11:57 AM
In the EAST UPFA got only 200000 of the 600000 that voted, other 400000 did not vote,if TNA had boycotted the election,UPFA would have looked weak..
Sue Sunday, 09 September 2012 07:59 AM
