The Mahanayake of the Asgiriya Chapter the Most Ven. Udugama Sri Buddharakkitha Thera said yesterday political leaders in the country should discourage Buddhist monks from taking to politics.

“I am not for or against monks doing politics and we can’t ask them to refrain from doing so. It is much better for political leaders to discourage the monks from entering the political arena,” the prelate said.

He expressed these views when United National Party (UNP) Deputy Leader Sajith Premadasa met the Mahanayake Thera on Wednesday in Kandy.

The prelate said everyone should work for the country despite insults and pressure from foreign countries.

“We should not work according to the dictates of foreign countries,” he said.

The prelate told Mr. Premadasa that when doing politics one has to face many problems, criticisms and crises, but one has to face up to these challenges bravely and with determination and go ahead with the assistance of others.

“If you can do so without insulting others, then your journey will be successful. Even President Mahinda Rajapaksa had to face many difficulties on his way to becoming President,” the prelate said. (J.A.L. Jayasinghe, Shane Seneviratne and Lalith Walisundara)

i think to become as a president in sri lanka, he has to be a buddist???

    Piyal Saturday, 14 January 2012 10:42 AM

Isn't there a code of conduct for Buddhist monks and what is the role of the Prelate if he is asking the politicians to control his monks. There is nothing worst than to see a Buddhist monk who preaches compassion and ahimsa of Lord Buddha acts like a normal lay person. To add to insult, the Prelate don't have any control over them.

Most Venerable Swaminwahansa, Really appreciate and admire your wise and straightforward utterances. We are fed up with those robe bearers who are engaged in street-fighting with police and fellow citizens. They do not possess any quality to be called as a Bhikkhu and should be encouraged to leave robes and engage in those activities (which are not suitable even for householders).

    liamsi Saturday, 14 January 2012 11:12 AM

its true they are loosing the respect and many a times they dont listen to them i

The monks should be screened as to their eligibility and real purposes before their acceptance as a monk. It has been very much apparent that why so many thugs want to become monks and ten years down the line they shift into a family life. I don’t think anyone has a problem with that however doing or attempt to do all these dishonest acts whilst in the frame of these spiritual ropes is the biggest issue here. The monks have to be an example for the society and not bringing the discredit to the religion or the country. We Buddhist shame to have these kind of monks oops.. I meant to say “hooligans” in our temples.

    raymond Saturday, 14 January 2012 12:13 PM

Correction! Keep Mervyn out of politics.

    Saman Saturday, 14 January 2012 12:23 PM

According to Budda's teachings, no monk could do politics as its violates Muddyama prathipadawa (middle path).

I agree with the point that religious leaders should keep away from influencing politics and governance. The cause of all ills of this country since independence began with the interference in politics by buddhists monks, the act of which buddha himself would have objected. Religion is a private matter that helps one's search in finding the everlasting timeless 'self' or 'athma' within. Politicians will try to exploite all avenues to come to power, but religious seekers or monks should desist from encouraging them, instead help these politicians achieve enlightenment and understanding that all living beings are 'one' and from the same unity. Any religion or religious monk or seeker who fails in this duty fails humanity.

First you better to be out of politics

    gamage Saturday, 14 January 2012 10:19 AM

Medalankara de Chopp Saturday, 14 January 2012 05:56 PM

What the heck had you been doing? You are like a weather cock turning according to the wind.If Sajith wants to be the leader of the party and the country he should avoid these social parasites.

    faqi Saturday, 14 January 2012 07:44 PM

A very intelligent comment by an erudite monk.

    gajan99 Saturday, 14 January 2012 11:37 PM

Fist, make sure you step out from politics.

    Haramanis Sunday, 15 January 2012 01:45 AM

Monks should follow lord Buddha's path; if not they are not monks but another set of previleged class who need not work to earn their living.

    Ganaya Sunday, 15 January 2012 02:29 AM

But you too must be hands off politics and become a buddhist monk, not like your current behaviour. If you practice at least 50% of upasampada sheela, it will be a paradise here....

    chithranganie Sunday, 15 January 2012 04:09 AM

Actually monks should keep out of politics - You know the harm
JHU has done. Did they do anything they promised. What happend to the inquire into the death of Ven Soma Hamuduruwa and the conversion act. They just keep quiet and as far as I know building mansions. Ven Ellawala Medhalankara was not able to go with the others. That is why Ven monk resigned. As Ven monk recently mentioned at a discussion, all Nikaya Mahanayakas should prohibit monks entering politics at all. Without doing that issuing statements will not help.

    Charmaine Sunday, 15 January 2012 04:41 AM

Good one - now if only we can keep famalies out fo politics too!!!!

    Guru Saturday, 14 January 2012 04:29 AM

Well said, but that should include you as well.

    BADA-UDA GEMMBA Friday, 13 January 2012 06:02 PM

    NOT BEFORE TIME!!!
Stick to preaching the LORD's teachings and message.

    Lankan Friday, 13 January 2012 10:50 PM

Agree. Religion and politics cannot go together. Spiritual aspects is different to politics.

    Nodrog Saturday, 14 January 2012 01:17 AM

Well said and hope it will be implemented. Politics and religion, both very controvesial subjects, cannot and should not be combined. Buddhist Priest should endeavor to maintain their respect and dabbling in politics is not the way to do it.

    mohan Saturday, 14 January 2012 01:45 AM

monk suppose to give up everything . unfortunately now days they trying to again everything.

    manik Saturday, 14 January 2012 02:15 AM

    Well said " Hamuduruwane" !!!!

    Amritananda Saturday, 14 January 2012 02:33 AM

It is rightly said that monks should refrain from joining active politics for any cost. But I can't understand why Venerable thera said that he can't asked monks to refrain from politics. He is one of the leading Mahayanakas. If all Mahayanakas come forward with sincereity, it is not difficult job to do. If they can't do it, then what is the use of Sangha sabha and electing Mahayanakas if they have no control over the sangha affairs.

    koththu Saturday, 14 January 2012 03:50 AM

Buddhism is a religion of practice. Unfortunately in Sri Lanka it has become a tool for politics, crime in the name of patriotism, tool for harassing other religions etc...

    Citizen Saturday, 14 January 2012 04:18 AM

It is most welcome, at least, as late as now, the wisdom of doing so has dawned on the Rev. Prelate! I hope this will materialise.

    Aristotle Friday, 13 January 2012 05:17 PM

    Monks keep off politics!

    shaheed Saturday, 14 January 2012 05:08 AM

Well said.I hope the monks listen to Asgiri mahnayaka and give up taking part in political activities and lose their dignity and respect among the people. There is no difference between them and the ordinary people. Few of them are spreading hatred and intolarence against other religeon. Please let everyone practice their respective religeon freely without fear.We need more priest of Asgiri mahanayaka calibre.

    jeyarajah@activj.net Saturday, 14 January 2012 05:25 AM

Thank you Most ven Mahanayakka, why don't you suggest this good proposal to other two chapters and include in our nations constitution. It is shame for Lord Buddha's preachings ,buddhism, and to our country. Please understand the instances where the international community interfear in our bussiness. The human right should be preserved. It may be - Sarath fonseka to day,and Hon President tomorrow and
even you day after tomorrow. So in our present constitution only international interfearence can help us to safe our fundemental rights.

    Mifaz Saturday, 14 January 2012 05:54 AM

Well said your highness. You could have told it some time back.

    Man B Saturday, 14 January 2012 06:13 AM

    Good for our country

    xlntgson Saturday, 14 January 2012 06:14 AM

Yes, your reverend! Monks should advice not administer any other than temples; in case if the admn. won't heed should pray, not curse!

    LOTUS Saturday, 14 January 2012 09:30 AM

finally the mahanayake's have a backbone to tell the monks to keep away from politics. Its a shame to see monks behaving like this. It's bad for the sasanaya too.

    gamage Saturday, 14 January 2012 10:16 AM

monks should retain to theie barraks and spred the dhamma to the buddhidt and not to do politcs and take the role of the thugs (polititians ) be in the parliments atleast they observe their law of buddhisme cofined to the temples or their ashrams try to arrive in their jhanas like good monks after which they could give advice to the buddhists
