Reacting to the report by a UN Chief appointed panel of experts, which has accused Colombo of committing war crimes, India said it was willing to engage Sri Lanka on the contents of the report.

India is having to walk a tightrope over the issue because of its concerns over the still incomplete rehabilitation of Tamils in the island nation, as also because of strategic compulsions arising out of China's unflinching support to Colombo.

“The government has seen the report of the panel of experts appointed by the UN Secretary General to advise him on accountability-related issues in the context of the end of the armed conflict in Sri Lanka in May 2009. The issues raised in the report need to be studied carefully. As a first step, we intend to engage with the government of Sri Lanka on the issues contained in the report,” the foreign ministry said in a guarded response.

Sri Lankan President Mahinda Rajapaksa had spoken to PM Manmohan Singh earlier after going through the report. Colombo is likely to go on a diplomatic offensive to garner support for itself. In all likelihood, it will look at Russia, China and India to bail itself out of the situation. The UN report has said killing of tens of thousands of people in the final stages of the Sri Lankan civil strife could amount to "war crimes".

The panel of experts also called on the UN Secretary General to immediately set up "an independent international mechanism" to investigate "credible" allegations that both Sri Lankan government and Tamil Tigers committed serious human rights violations, including some that could amount to war crimes and crimes against humanity, in the months before the decades old civil war ended in 2009.

During a conflict of this nature (in this case a 30 year one) how can one draw a line between a "War" and a "War Crime) ???. If one analyzes histories of all wars the majorities of many who died have been innocents. Prevention of conflicts is of paramount importance rather than carrying out investigations, issuing reports and calling for further action against a Government.

    Not chapathi, Vaspati malli.

    Mahasona Thursday, 28 April 2011 02:36 AM

UN did not help the SL govt in all that 30 years. They showed a blind eye to crimes of mass deaths made by LTTE [a group Tamils who wanted power & not the general Tamils as such] in bombings in towns & buses. The whole people as Sri Lankans lived in harmony. What about child labour employed & killings & torture amounting to chaining by iron & not feeding and forcing a slow death. SL govt saved not only the tamils but also the whole nation. Now the people can move about or affected Tamils even the LTTE cadres can start a life risk free on landmine removed areas.

Only way out is doing a proper INTERNAL investigation and punishing the culprits if there is any. Not doing that allow other people to intervene. Blaming UN, US or any other won't help.

India has provided silent support to this mayhem. India needs to decide whether it is going to continue joining the criminals of Sri Lanka or be the Mahatma of this region and bring in justice.

Lanke Banda Wednesday, 27 April 2011 06:26 AM

India should be wiser than Banki Moon & the UN. S.L. is a sovereign country and its majority people mandated wiping off the LTTE. LTTE consisted of 99.9 % Tamils and with the LTTE these Tamil Terrorists perished.
Same happened to the JVP Military up rising. JVP consisted of 100 % Sinhalese & They perished with the Military Offensive.
The world should understand from these facts that GOSL targeted uprisings whether Tamil or Sinhalese with the same objective to bring normality to the daily lives of its Citizens.
If this is not the Principal a Govt should act then why are the Western Countries getting involved in Countries such as Afganistan,East Timor,Libya,Pakistan etc etc etc...... ?????

    Ananda Wednesday, 27 April 2011 05:59 AM

Ban Ki Moon resign over this blunder!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!He is a digrace to the UN and the most dumbest puppett ever lead the UN!!!!!!!!!!! He is the ONLY UN SG who were bought by a Terrorist organization and their Western suporters.

Disgraceful Ban Ki Moon should resign immedietly

reeri yaka Wednesday, 27 April 2011 05:56 AM

Government of Sri Lanka is accountable to people of Sri Lanka only, not to UN or India any other

    AJI Wednesday, 27 April 2011 04:14 AM

There is nothing to talk with Sri Lanka. India should declare Tami Naudu as an independent country for tamils.

    Kasturi Wednesday, 27 April 2011 04:09 AM

India must not intervene the Sri Lankan problems again, if it learned lesson of the fate of Rajiv. India only could help Sri Lanka to develop the North & East area if it has any interest of the betterment of Tamils in the Island.

    Wimal_Modawansa Wednesday, 27 April 2011 04:06 AM

yOUR RESPONSE IS ALWAYS SLOW AND CONFUSING .

Nicky Karunarathna Wednesday, 27 April 2011 03:59 AM

SL, India, Russia and China in a joint communique should name UNSG BanKi Moon and its so-called panel members are Persono Non Grata immediately - as this was total fraud and editors of the report were non other than criminal, brutal barbaric, ruthless, blood thirsty LTTE itself and the report complied by them from their mouth pieces. In this said communique they should demand to pay $ 300 billion for lost to the economy and brutally slain people by LTTE at the behest of these conspirators namely, UN, UK, and US to Sri Lanka.

    v vendetta Wednesday, 27 April 2011 03:53 AM

I am certain that all this calamity is not going to do anything good to the Tamils who are in the process of being rehabilitated, who actually are the people in need right now...

    willows Wednesday, 27 April 2011 03:55 AM

why can't these so called international leave us to handle our own matters

    DUWI Wednesday, 27 April 2011 03:54 AM

The simple fact is that the LTTE held civilians against their will as a human shield to protect themselves from the Sri Lankan military offensive.

Therefore, it is the LTTE that should be held accountable and prosecuted for alleged war crimes.

The international community never exerted any pressure on the LTTE to release civilians in the final months of the war (barring for a few weak statements) in the hope that the Sri Lankan Government would stop the offensive.

However, as the former UN spokesman in Sri Lanka has said, India never wanted Sri Lanka to stop the war.
