The United National Party (UNP) today said the government should increase salaries of employees in both the government and private sectors because of the rapidly increasing cost of living.

“The government only keeps heaping more and more taxes and burdens on people without increasing their salaries,” UNP MP Ranjith Madduma Bandara told a news conference.

He said it was four years since the war ended in 2009 and the UNP was still waiting for the Government to provide salary increases to the workers in the state and private sectors.

Wonder what happened to that elusive Rs.2500.- salary hike promised by none other than the President himself prior to his first term. Obviously, it goes without saying that Sri Lankans have very short memories.
