The UNP charged today that the government’s recent pledge to implement the 13th Amendment plus was a ploy to hoodwink the international community.

Addressing a press conference, UNP Vice President Lakshman Kiriella said that the SLFP-led alliances opposed the 13th Amendments when it was introduced in 1987, but today, they had pledged to honour it.

Mr. Kiriella said that the SLFP leaders dubbed the 13th Amendment as a move that would pave the way for the separation of the country. (Kelum Bandara)

So what? A statement by a bankrupt politician.

We cannot see the 'peace and reconciliation' process anywhere in the north and east. We see gun carrying soldiers everywhere, why are they there in large numbers when the president says there have not been a single incident that can be attributed to LTTE since May 2009?

Tamil speaking minorities lived in peace until the Sinhala Only enacted in 1956. Any agreement signed to find a solution to the language problem is torpedoed by the opposition of the time and Buddhist monks by rousing communal riots. How can power sharing hurt the majority community? It has not done so in India, Switzerland and all the countries. Muslims and Tamils want to preserve their cultural identities which will enrich and enlighten the country as a whole. You cannot convert the ethnic minorities to convert themselves to mono-culture by assimilation.

This is not about sinhalese smiling and tamils need to smile back. It is about empowerment systems and administrations to be handed over to tamils for development in their own areas in their own language and culture under a united SL. Would you be happy if Matara, Galle and Hambantota are administrated predominantly by tamils? By the way, Colombo has many tamils from the north, is not because they love it but due to the comfortable facilities available which is not found in Jaffna nor because of the kindness of the southern sinhalese allowing them to stay (not forgetting harrassments from security and paramilitary forces happening in the north). If Jaffna had the facilties of Colombo, what is the neccessity for a Jaffna Tamil come to Colombo? If GOSL had a priority to develop the north, why not an international airport, stadium, highway, harbor which is concentrated only to southern areas? Even houses for refugees are donated by foreign countries.

No one cares for your empty warnings. The UNP is a toothless tiger that can only meow like a cat not trumpet proudly like an elephant so stop playing to the gallery.

PROF. KOPAN MAHADEVA Friday, 27 January 2012 12:53 AM

The UNP would lose public respect if they oppose steps of the peace & reconciliation process for the sake of proving that they are the leaders of the opposition. It is now being generally accepted that the 13th Amendment cannot be implemented in-toto, for it was formulated 25-years ago. Hence the UNP would do well to take the peace process seriously and make sensible detailed suggestions from their experience and thinking to assist practically and objectively in and outside parliament towards a solution,

Wrong. Its the Tamils who are fanatics. Far as I know the majority Sinhalese accept Tamils as Sri Lankans and get along with them. But the Tamils don't try to assimilate with the Sinhalese and keep to themselves. They hanker for self-determination and separate living areas but will the Tamils already living in Colombo relocate there...I doubt it because they know they will be under the jack-boots of the TNA. Think about how much the Govt has done for the Tamils and still doing? Why are the Tamils still so full of hate. Don't you think it's time to let that ship sail off???

When the top brass of the UNP does not want to be seen as traitors to the country, they seem to push this unfortunate man to talk nonsense on matters of national interest!!!Or is he talking to give more bite to the international terrorist supporters!Shame!!!

Sri Minnal Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:32 AM

We all know that. It is no point talking about it...

    Rajaratnam Thursday, 26 January 2012 01:02 PM

In 1987 you also opposed cant you remember. We can remember very well

    Fayad Thursday, 26 January 2012 09:49 AM

Before you make such a statements come out of your well see how US hoodwinked the international community for 24 Iraqi deaths 3 moths imprisonment. but you are tying to bring-down your motherland for what gain.

    Fayad Thursday, 26 January 2012 09:42 AM

A statement by a bankrupt politician, we need not hoodwink or bow-down to international community
The solution should meet the aspirations of all communities living in Sri lanka not the international community..

    Prof.Henricks Thursday, 26 January 2012 08:56 AM

So what? Well done to the government. No need to tell the international forces what we are actually upto. They will not help either way.

    naDay Thursday, 26 January 2012 08:36 AM

    Maturity.

buffaloa citizen Thursday, 26 January 2012 08:32 AM

It is clear that communalism and racism is part and parcel of sinhalese politics. A problem that can be sorted permanently simply by providing a federal solution under a united SL is kept alive with increasing fanatism and extremism under bankrupt reasons like patriotism. Sinhalese fanatics need to realise that according to Buddhism, our next birth and life cycle can be to a refugee tamil mother living destitute in the north as karma against the deeds we do in our present life.

    DEEP Thursday, 26 January 2012 07:59 AM

    What are you proposing?
To give full fleged eelam or seperate state if your party come to powere?? That is what you tried to do in 2001-2004?
