High rainfall in catchments

The Meteorology Department issued a warning to the naval and fishing communities while reporting a significant rainfall in the catchement areas in the country early today.

The department reported the highest rainfall of 138.1 mm at Canyon Reservoir during the 24 hours ended 8.30 this morning. The department also warned that the fishermen and the navy to refrain from their activities.

Hydro catchment areas in the country had received a significant amount of rain with the highest rainfall of 138.1 mm being recorded at Canyon Reservoir.
The Department said Castlereigh had received a rainfall of 90.3 mm, Maussakele 87.3mm, Norton Bridge 59.5 mm, Kothmale 38.0 mm, Lakshapana 35.0mm, Ukuwela 25.5mm, Aranayake 18.1mm, Kukuleganga 12.7mm, Mapalana 9.4mm, Rantambe 7.5mm, Samanalawewa 6.0mm and Victoria 6.0mm.

Meanwhile, Maskeliya recorded a rainfall of 74.5 mm, Nuwara Eliya 36.2 mm, Balangoda 31.4mm, Mathugama 24.4mm and Matale 20.0 mm.

The Department meanwhile warned that the fishermen and the navy to refrain from their activities.

It said that the western coastal areas up to Pottuvil and the seas from Jaffna to Trincomalee would be rough.

“Naval and fishing communities are requested to refrain from their activities in the deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo and Galle,” it said.

The Met. Department also warned that windy conditions were expected to continue over Sri Lanka and neighbouring sea areas.

“Showers will occur at times in the Western, Sabaragamuwa, Central and Southern Provinces and in the Puttalam and Kurunegala Districts.  Heavy showers (Around 100mm) are also expected at some places,” the Department said.

“There will be showers or thundershowers at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Puttalam to Hambantota via Galle. Showers at several places can be expected in other sea areas around the island too,” it said.

“Winds will be Southwesterly direction and speed will be 30 - 40 km/hr. The speed may increase up to 60-70kmph at times in the sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo and Galle as well as the sea areas off the coast extending from Jaffna to Trincomalee,” it said.  

“The sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Galle as well as the sea areas off the coast extending from Jaffna to Trincomalee will be rough. Naval and fishing communities are requested to refrain from their activities in the deep and shallow sea areas off the coast extending from Mannar to Pottuvil via Colombo and Galle, the department said in a media communiqué.
