The temperature in the Nuwara Eliya district had gone below 5ºC resulting in ground frost last afternoon, the Meteorology Department said yesterday.

A duty forecaster attached to the Department said the frost could be a threat to vegetable cultivation in the area. He said farmers should water on their crops regularly in order to minimise the effect.

The temperature in several other areas were also low yesterday with Bandarawela experiencing a temperature of 11.8ºc, 15.5ºc in Badulla and 16.4ºc in Katugastota. However the temperature in other areas remained around 23º c yesterday.

Meanwhile, the prevailing cold weather had resulted in an increase of respiratory ailments among people in the Central Hills. A Badulla Hospital spokesman said there was a definite increase in the number of patients who had come for treatment for respiratory conditions.(Yohan Perera)
