The government has accused General Sarath Fonseka of attempting to downplay the war victory by disputing the date on which the country was liberated from the clutches of terrorism after he said yesterday that Prabhakaran was killed on May 19 and not 18.

Media Minister Keheliya Rambukwella made these remarks at a press conference a short while ago.

Fonseka said yesterday that the Tiger leader was only killed after President Mahinda Rajapaksa had declared in Parliament on May 19 that Prabakaran was dead. (SD)

Govt has not forgotten who won the war, but not Gen Fonseka alone. Truth is bitter, but you have to admit it and and at same time you have to admit Gen Fonseka's iresponsible statements which put SL govt and Armed Forces in GRAVE danger. Recent article by Col Gotabhaya Rajapakesa mentioned about the General in a positive way. It is the JVP clowns around Gen Fonseka who fed him with poisonous material and made him a traitor.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:12 AM

We are waiting to identify the war criminal in the truthful way.

World is moving in the right direction. The government can hide for one year, or two years, but can not be for ever.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:12 AM

Fonseka is the man who led the war to the success. It is so natural to speak up, when somebody claims something funny about this.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:18 AM

But the whole world say that both of them are war criminals. What are you going to say about it.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:21 AM

It is a shame on us great Sri Lankans, a tiny dot in the Indian Ocean with a very high literacy rate above 90%to fight like street dogs for some interested parties to laugh at us. We are superficially patriotic and of course we have our own Agendas and this applies to the Government and the opposition as well.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:27 AM

Do you say that govt has lost its public confidence? Then how did they win all the elections. It is quite surprise to see this scenario.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:30 AM

    what is true@ sri lanka

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:31 AM

He has been telling them all this while. Sadly you watch only government media.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:32 AM

    I agree with you.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:33 AM

What is the problem with all of you. Wasn't it enough that the terrorist were destroyed? YOu all seem to be unhappy with the outcome. Maybe you would have been happier if the carnage that was continued as long as you were safe.
Be grateful to the Government, soldiers and the people who contributed to end this war. Say a prayer do not mumble.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 08:49 AM

The death certificate has not been produced todate, so who knows when he is dead? May be we can have both the 18th & 19th as future public holidays! hi hi

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:29 AM

Your whole world has only UK, EU and US only. There are over 200 countries in the world.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:32 AM

Ryan, Spot on mate.....This also shows the impact of Praba & LTTE on Sri Lankas.... and I foresee this will continue for a long time ....

    Friday, 21 May 2010 09:32 AM

Nobody want to know the VP date of death. Only thing is VP is no more. That's enough !!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 06:52 AM

Government is any way against Fonseka and his statements. What to do ?. The truth can't be buried forever. It'll come up one day and will open the eyes of all the Sri Lankans. We'll wait and see.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 06:54 AM

Dont be too concerned about such minor matters. I am sure that are major problems to resolve.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 06:56 AM

Mr. Fonseka the date is immaterial ( Are you sure 25th Dec is the day Christ was born ) . What Sri Lankan's reflect is the end of a ruthless barbarian; In all honesty he may have been morally dead in early May.

The other thing is President kissed the ground as a gesture of respect , have you been humble enough to do the same ?

    Friday, 21 May 2010 06:59 AM

Govt to celeberate the war voctory by jailing the commander
who won the war for us, If he wouldnt have contested the election He is a hero now! shame sri lanka.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:00 AM

don't care which date he was killed !!! important thing is this issue is solved now !

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:03 AM

Cheap politics from all sides. We are fed up of all!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:04 AM

By forgiving Gen. SF, government will certainly regain the confidence and respect of the general public. Gen. F has a huge capacity and insight in resolving major problems, why not use him wisely without any fear!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:05 AM

what ever the date is ,the fact remains that the monster is gone.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:07 AM

BF, if the date is immaterial why the GOSL slam Fonseka??

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:08 AM

Then treat him fairly. Dont over react or pretend. If you are clever you should expect these things. Gen. SF will do all damages to you for his defence. Why not? You treated him that way. You made our player of the tournament a Prisoner. I dont agree with SF 'that' statement yesterday at all

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:11 AM

Media is showing aerial views of the flood situation in the country. Nothing said by the Hon. K.R about solving this problem. Instead he is worried about the date when Praba was killed. This date is HISTORY now. Let's worry about the PRESENT pathetic situation in our country Praba is over but now Nature is against Sri Lanka..

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:15 AM

Show Gen Fonseka the death certficate of Prabha to see the correct date.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:16 AM

thats because Fonseka is trying to undermine the government and the war victory by making this small thing a big issue!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:20 AM

All citizens must think 'country before self' before making any statements relates to country's image and national security.

As far as Sarath Fonseka goes, he has been a traitor from the day he decided to get into politics for personal benefits and personal fame.

    Hero turned villain ...

    -- Danushke --

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:21 AM

Nothing else other than the fact that a great soldier is now doing dirty politics by disgracing the hero's uniform once he wore.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:26 AM

Why is SF coming out with a date issue only now. He had 12 months to talk about it. Shame on SF.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:31 AM

There is no death certificate, No body knows the date of the death.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:35 AM

Why does the dates make such big issue here. The main thing is the forces as a team got rid of the bad guys and that is end of the story. Let start developing the country than complaining. There are much serious issues we are facing at present. Let 's not waste our valuable time. Use it for more constructive work.
    Thanks !

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:39 AM

    The truth will always prevail.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:40 AM

    leave him alone for once.PLEASE!

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:41 AM

REPORT IT TO THE INTERNATIONAL MEDIA & SEND A SMS TO OBAMA ABOUT IT

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:42 AM

Do you also propose forgiving everyone who slanders, steals or engages in other petty and serious criminal activities? Its bad enough that kudu Lals and the like get away with political patronage, but we should all respect the law and be ready for punishment if we are caught and proved as doing so. No one should be forgiven for slandering the good name of a nation and bringing disrepute to a nation and its army. Not SF, not RW, not Mahinda Rajapakse.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:46 AM

Why is our war hero acting in such an irresponsible & wayward manner? He is putting our country into more turmoil. The dates does make a big difference. If I remember right, the war ended on the 18th May. What the General is trying to state is that VP was not killed whilst in combat but after capture and by stating this he is playing further into the hands of the anti-Lankan forces.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:48 AM

I can remember the date.Truly, it was in 18.05.2009. Why Fonseka takes political advantages for that. Truth is truth. I think he forgot everything.

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:49 AM

What is the truth you are eagally waiting for ?

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:53 AM

What are the issues he raised other than MR, GR and War. Nothing. So how can you tell he is capable of everything ???

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:53 AM

My house is sorrounded by water. The road to my house is flooded with 3 feet high water. But my main concern was what was the date that LTTE Leader Prabakaran died. Even our family had an argument about the date of his death as some said it was the 18th and some said it was the 19th May. My youngest brother even said that it was in November 2007 that Prabhakaran died, because it was uncle Rambukwella who on national Rupavahini , that day said that Prabhakaran died.
All my problems will be over if I can find a solution to the exact date of his death. Not only me but all Sri Lankans main problem at this moment is finding the date.
Floods and rising level of water, but who cares?

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:56 AM

Now Mr. Fonseka helping us to identify who he is?

    Friday, 21 May 2010 07:56 AM

If government claims is true, Fonseka has forgotten the date of killing of Prabha. But government has forgotten who fought the war,
