The Government yesterday told Parliament that it would wait till the Indian General Elections was over to answer a question raised by the opposition UNP about India procuring of arms from Sri Lanka as revealed by the Indian Defence Minister in Lok Sabha.

United National Party (UNP) parliamentarian Talatha Athukorale directed this question at the Government seeking details on weapons procurement. In her question placed in the Order Paper, she sought details about the time period of this transaction, and the profit made by the Sri Lankan authorities in this case. She also asked whether there was any report that could affirm the transparency of this arms deal.

However, Chief Government Whip Dinesh Gunawardane asked for one month’s time to answer this question.

“Let’s wait till the Indian elections are over,” he said.
