TNA MP Suresh Premachandran refuting recent remarks made by Defence Secretary Gotabaya Rajapaksa said that the statement was a prelude to changing the demographic patterns of the North.

In an interview with BBC, Defence secretary Rajapaksa has said it is not appropriate to view the north of the country, over which a separatist war was fought, as a predominantly Tamil area.

“The most recent census revealed that out of the 954,000 residents in the North 900,000 are Tamils and 23,000 Sinhalese, so what is the Defence Secretary trying to say? Almost all the census carried out by the governments, have revealed this demographic pattern. Is he saying that this is not true?” MP Premachandran asked.

Premachandran went on to state that that the acts of the government are clearly set on an agenda. “ The growing number of Buddhist temples in the area, the militarization of the north and the fact that there are new Sinhalese settlements in many areas of the North shows what the Defence Secretary wants to do is to change the demographic patterns of the Northern province” he said.(Hafeel Farisz)

You kalu suddha these were all ancient sinhala buddhist areas which can easily be shown by what is remaining after all the distruction done by the Tamils to these archeological sites. Much more is under ground.... The higest density of tanks are in the North & eastern provinces. The tamils must have bulit the i suppose. Wonder whu not a single tank is found in Tamil Nadu know ?

Look at the census of the 1930's, the Sinhalese population of Colombo was over 90%. Now the Sinhalese are a minority but that seems to be fine with the Tamil racist TNA.

The demography of north should change. Sinhalese and muslims who were in North before should allow settle again if they wish to. Otherwise, would TNA need sending all Tamils settle in Colombo and other socalled "south" back to North (will they go back to live with these idiots?). Mr. Premachandran, unlike R. Sampanthan, I actually have a bit of respect for you. But I must disagree with you regarding the demographics. To upset the balance of 900,000 tamils you need at least 300,000 Sinhalese (25%). I honestly don't see this happening anytime soon. Regarding the Buddhist temples now this I agree with you. The 'Sinhala Buddhists' think they are showing their victory/superiority but all they are showing is their stupidity & insecurity.

TNA MP Suresh Premachandran should be reminded that the goal of the Indian supported Tamil Tigers was even worse. They wanted a homeland of those areas he is addressing. He should be told to read the US civil war where after the end of that war the victorious Union military stayed in the defeated Confederate states for decades and not 3 years. He should be told that Tamils are allowed to settle in any part of Sri Lanka, even in the deep south and the same is allowed for the Singhalese population. He should be told that the traditional Tamil areas of Sri Lanka died with the end of the Civil war and all areas of SL are open to any community for settlement and finally he should be told that the domestic affairs of Sri Lanka are non of his business since Sri Lankans did not elect him.

Tamils are free to buy land and build houses in Colombo and other areas (it's probably debatable how well they would be able to live without discrimination in all areas of the South!) The issue is not that. It is about land-grabbing by the high and mighty and those with political connections, when the local people have not been resettled themselves, and fears of a deliberate policy of changing the demographics rather than a natural process of Sinhalese moving there for their own business and setting up their lives on their own. It would be interesting to see the profile of Sinhalese who are 'migrating' to the North and East post-2009!
