Fonseka to attend parliament

A A A

Detained General Sarath Fonseka will attend parliament on April 22 and deliver his maiden speech, the Democratic National Alliance (DNA) claimed today.

DNA General Secretary Vijitha Herath, countering the argument raised by some UPFA seniors that General Fonseka cannot become an MP as he has been court martialed, claimed the General could attend Parliament as the law prevents one from coming to the House only if he is facing a case filed in civil courts as per section 84 of the Constitution. It is so funny!

    Monday, 05 April 2010 10:21 AM

Fonseka will not win at the elections.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 10:23 AM

The only way he could have entered parliament is through the elephant. Not through the JVP

    Monday, 05 April 2010 10:26 AM

Can any lawyer give a honest opinion, on the article. As if some one cannot attend parliament just because there is a case pending, I think half of the parliament will not be able to attend it as many of them have one or the other cases against them

    Monday, 05 April 2010 10:44 AM

Lets wait for the great day before commenting, but seeing Fonseka in parliament is the last thing the Govt would want as Fonseka is equivalent to at least 50members in the opposition

    Monday, 05 April 2010 10:45 AM

    A mid summer nights dream!

    Monday, 05 April 2010 10:57 AM

Fonseka is a honest person, he tried his best to dicipline the Sec Forces and make them suitable for war fighting. He took many actions again faulters in the army irrespective seniors or juniors. MR & G.Paya too never intervened on this and war is finished although there are some inevitable events

    Monday, 05 April 2010 11:02 AM

    Too Early to say

    Monday, 05 April 2010 11:11 AM

Section 84 refers to "Bills inconsistent with the Constitution" and has nothing to do with the issue. Further it is the section 89 that refers to Disqualification for election as Member of Parliament. As for that section one has to be CONVICTED for disqualification. What is going on in this country? Our law as far as I know presumes the accused is innocent until proven guilty or is it not valid in case of SF!!!!!!!

    Monday, 05 April 2010 11:30 AM

If he gets there against all odds it will be an opener to all negative thinkers. Let Colombo District voters decide that on behalf of the whole Nation.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 11:59 AM

Our current problems are the Transnational group,Tamil diaspora,Nation building, Employment,Investment, cost of living and bringing Sri Lanka up to the fore. And Mahinda is a true leader who has a track record of good proven performance. As for Sarath who was a good General, politically unstable, no second chance because this is not a trial and error game, serious business. Give Mahinda 100 percent support and if he does not perform change leadership in the next election. True Sri Lankan for motherland..

    Monday, 05 April 2010 12:04 PM

Since SF is a candidate in Colombo and contesting under JVP lead aliance the chance of winning is very slim and we all know that Vijitha is uttering this against his conscience.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 10:13 AM

May be will form a Government

    Monday, 05 April 2010 01:45 PM

Vijitha must be day dreaming, because it is known and practiced that only some foreign dignitaries (like presidents, Prime Ministers, Kings, Hair to thrones etc.,) is allowed to address the Parliament/Congress etc.,. But not every Dick, Tom and Harry, even though these have once tried to get a place in the parliament. If Vijitha is right, then he should try to address the British Parliament as a MP of the Sri Lankan parliament.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 02:15 PM

Voters of the district have kind hearts and will see to the best happens. Bias predictions will not work out.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 02:59 PM

Attending parliment through JVP is yet another mistake by SF. People wonder why SF decided to join a bankrupt and uncivilized party to bring in peace to the country.

SF joining MR to wipe out LTTE was the correct decision. But MR deciding to put him behind bars is the Bad decision MR taken.

SF is tasting the bad decision to join JVP, symilarly MR will soon taste the wrong decision for jailing SF who has been with him for his success.

MR should release him and allow SF to fight against corruption in MR government if MR government s clean.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 03:33 PM

i am definitely voting for him tho i have always voted unp in the past. May god bless my hero.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 04:21 PM

Fonseka is an officer and a gentleman, dispite what ever the rats say.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 06:24 PM

SF VS MR The winner is EU & USA and LTTE ,the looser is people of sri lanka ,

    Monday, 05 April 2010 07:55 PM

SF will win in colombo on 8th April. truth will previal. remember mendella was imprisoned for 27 years.

    Tuesday, 06 April 2010 12:02 AM

According to the Constitution of Sri Lanka the General must be CONVICTED by a COURT if he is to be disqualified. So far he has not been convicted even by the Kangaroo Court.

    Tuesday, 06 April 2010 06:14 AM

    hey people,
JVP is out this time to ride thr luck through the Rtd. Gen. Sarath Fonseka who is a war hero even in the books of HE the president MR.
They (JVP) are trying really hard to snatch some last minute votes by stating nonsence where as if the General gets elected to the parliament then due to him being not having rights to participate in the parliamentary sessions they (JVP) then can get that "Hadunneththi" guy in. That's y all these nonsence.
Dont get caught. Think wise !!!!

    Tuesday, 06 April 2010 06:17 AM

If Fonseka's health is so bad as the JVP claims, how can he deliver a speech in the new parliament. He will not deliver his speech on a stretcher, Will he? Thus, JVP's damn lie has exploded in their face.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 08:31 AM

Anne, Don't be a story teller or joker Of the day

    Monday, 05 April 2010 07:51 AM

Stop counting the chickens before the eggs hatch.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 07:57 AM

The count was correct and the chickens were hatched properly even for the Presidential Elections but alas, the final count was rigged by visible hands.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 07:59 AM

Consider the wise saying 'every dark cloud has a silver lining'!

    Monday, 05 April 2010 07:59 AM

when contesting fr presidency SF said his only target is to abolish the executive presidency[which he went back on]
it's interesting to know what he is contesting for now..

    Monday, 05 April 2010 08:06 AM

    You are dreaming Neil

    Monday, 05 April 2010 08:07 AM

yes it will be a good news for us...

    Monday, 05 April 2010 08:14 AM

No worries about those statements. When you go to Angoda you can see lot of them like Vijitha Herath

    Monday, 05 April 2010 08:20 AM

Chckens were hatched but the jekel came and did the rest??

    Monday, 05 April 2010 08:21 AM

    Don't be so foolish.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 08:26 AM

Correct. Our Election Commissioner should be responsible for all these shameless acts and he wall well rewarded already. Will get his profits in the future also. He is shameless.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 07:49 AM

Sarath Fonseka should really be in the president's chair. That should be the wish of all Sri Lankans respecting democracy. It is still not too late for people to make the right decision

    Monday, 05 April 2010 08:40 AM

There will be another charge framed against him to prevent him from taking part in politics.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 08:58 AM

General Sarath Fonseks is the President of Sri Lanka legitimately. So herhas to occupy the seat of the President not. This is legitimate as he won the elections.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 09:00 AM

Neil, You r very true.If SL to go forward people should vote SF.People should remember his positives rathan the negatives created by MR govt.. think wisley !!

    Monday, 05 April 2010 09:04 AM

Sarath Fonseka is correct on this occasion. If he wants to exercise his legitimate rights, he should do so.

But, I do not appreciate his actions of spliting the Sinhalese. He had no interest in politics. That is why he did not even enrol in the voter registry.

What he is doing is taking revenge from Mahinda for some sort of disagreement. This is not a good reason to ask for our vote.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 09:04 AM

    Another day dream

    Monday, 05 April 2010 09:49 AM

    Pissuda thamuseta!!!

    Monday, 05 April 2010 09:53 AM

Wishful thinking Fonseka will LOSE his deposit

    Monday, 05 April 2010 09:59 AM

    Nonsence!

    Monday, 05 April 2010 10:02 AM

Jehan, our country consists of rice-eating people. You only day dreaming. A person who has been robbed of his presidency is definitely poll the highest preferential vote at the General Elections.

    Monday, 05 April 2010 10:03 AM

We Thank vijitha Herath for enligthning the public,
