General Sarath Fonseka, who is under military custody, will continue his fast unto death, despite the military providing him telephone facilities today to speak to his children, sources said.

Speaking to Daily Mirror Online, Anoma Fonseka said that her husband had rejected the telephone provided by the army as he insisted he wanted to speak to his two daughters only via his wife’s mobile phone.

“He is continuing his fast. He will only stop if he is allowed to speak to our children through my mobile phone. He does not trust anyone,” Mrs. Fonseka said soon after she visited the General today.

However the army said that following a request made to the authorities, the military had given him the privilege of speaking to his daughters over a mobile phone and insisted that this was an ‘additional’ privilege provided to the General as the Army was not bound by any court order or any other law to facilitate calls between the General and his daughters. Hey Sarath, stop actling like a naughty little brat! This is one spoilt General!

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:02 PM

If the General has nothing to hide, what does it matter as to whose phone he uses?

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:38 AM

How strange that the army general thinks that the government cannot listen to his conversation with his daughters if he uses his wife's mobile. Our guys probably have the best IT technology to tap phones, internet etc. which he should jolly well know as that was the key to many a successes with the LTTE

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:40 AM

    That's to avoid being bugged!

    Tuesday, 09 March 2010 12:13 AM

If democracy were on the right path, the General would be a free person today.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:43 AM

This is getting really crazy...Usually when in custody you are permitted to make one single call, which is usually to your lawyer. GoSL should deny him the use of any telephone.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:48 AM

If he is a prisoner, how can he be allowed to use electronics telecommunications equipment? C'mon MR, either he is a criminal and he should be treated as such, or he is not and then he should not be in prison. You can't have it both ways.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:48 AM

    provide him a satlite phone.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:50 AM

What a headach this power hungry man has become. No sooner he is charged & sent to remand like all othe opostion politians of the past had to undergo is better for this country. We cannot afford to have special breed of prisoners. It's a bad precedent to allow

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:50 AM

There must be majic in this mobile phone. Maybe the SIM is a hotlink to the CIA!

Dear General, a phone is a phone. Pick up the landline receiver provided the magananimous Army Commander and say "Hi" to your daughters in the US.

They may know where their husband is hiding! Watch out. Let the poor guy continue to live in the hole as did Saddam Hussein!

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:52 AM

Poor Man why he needs that, ask for skype

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:55 AM

The General still thinks he is the"General". Interesting to see the outcome. The hallmark of a conspirator is amply visible.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:56 AM

Why was he allowed to make phone calls in the first place?

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:58 AM

SF is really going bonkers to ask for a particular phone to call the daughters! I don't think any person in the world has made a demand like this.
    Whats' wrong with this man?

    Monday, 08 March 2010 11:58 AM

A phone is a phone & if he honestly wants to speak to his daughters, does it really matter which phone he uses? It is believed he has abused this privilege to keep in touch with American intelligence agents to prepare dossiers to try the S/L Army and hence the reason that he only wants Anoma's phone.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:03 PM

ha ha ha..SF does not like to waist GOSL money. That's why he needs wife's phone. BTW ,I think his fast means only easting from KFC?

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:04 PM

For you KP, Karuna are more patriotic than SF. Darke must be another Hudson

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:07 PM

The people in higher authority who act on these cases, must remember that we all are human-being. According to the Buddhism if we do any unfair thing to another, definitely it will boomerang to the place of origin soon100, times severely..If you are a Buddhist please behave accordingly.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:29 PM

Though MR. Gotabaya repeatedly saying that there is nothing his involvement in this, any fool can understand that this is a personal revenge.
SF was a war hero, he was a defeated presidential candidate.
Why Mr President is trying to humiliate him so much.
Mr. President has won the margin of 1.8 m.
If government is not going to stop this harassment to SF, more sympathy votes will be obtained by him in GE. Also the good name of Sri Lanka and the reputation of the government will be in danger.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:35 PM

Or they can arrest Anoma and two daughters and put them in same room

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:37 PM

    But this is illegal custody

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:41 PM

Can army provide him video conference via skype.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:42 PM

Let this idiot to die if he want. Then all our war HEROES will be safe safe.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:44 PM

As Tamil i am happy to see this things happening...

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:44 PM

Very good move.......... you are great general............. we salute you...........

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:46 PM

has he anything to hide, may b the whereabouts of his bana may b :)))

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:55 PM

    Mahinda shame about you

    Monday, 08 March 2010 12:57 PM

I'm begining to think that he is not even good for commander of Salvation Army.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 01:05 PM

    Mr, Drake,put yourself into general's shoes.then u will understand.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 01:14 PM

Next he will ask fascillities to call every one and internet access to destroy the image of SL.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 01:15 PM

Mr Drake, he is not a criminal. He is a political prisnor, and has many facilities which has already been denied.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 01:17 PM

its so bad for a war hero a telephone call

    Monday, 08 March 2010 01:21 PM

Why did they first permit him to make calls, and then deny him this facility? If it is incorrect to make calls, then they shd not hv permitted it from the beginning.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 02:25 PM

This is the first time he understand what is Soldiers Hhunger !.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 02:51 PM

it must be a set-light phone, dats y he asked for his wife's phone...

    Monday, 08 March 2010 04:30 PM

And no man in the democratic world has been arrested on frivolous, 'trumped-up,' charges like him. That is what is wrong.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 04:32 PM

Very sad situation. A national hero! 'The world's best General' who tamed the most illusive terror organiztion in the world. Just because he went against his commander-in-chief he is now given this degrading punishment. People like Ranil W. should be ashamed for not doing enough to guarantee his release.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 04:54 PM

    Like a satellite-phone?

    Monday, 08 March 2010 05:53 PM

This is better than a 'soap opera.' ... Someone should have a little reenactment and put it on the net.

    Monday, 08 March 2010 06:06 PM

    Monday, 08 March 2010 07:39 PM

Why not go on hunger-strike for a worthwhile cause, instead of a stupid phone?

    Monday, 08 March 2010 08:36 PM
