Who can now complain that the Sri Lankan people are not an industrious nation, we now export cars top Nepal, Kassippu & beedi to the villagers, who why not cigarettes; don't we boast of an "open market." Or is it simply that the stiff competion with the Ceylon Tobacco company and the State Distilleries Corp; is hurting those who run it.

This is what happens and will happen as long as excessive taxes are applied to products many people don't like and many people do like. Leave the taxes at a reasonable level and then you will find the crooks and the smugglers and the greedy people will not branch out on their own into these areas.
