CWC strongman and Deputy Minister Muttu Sivalingam told a news conference that they would be compelled to take union action if there was no favorable response regarding the daily wages of the estate workers. The unions are currently having discussions on renewing the collective agreement which determines the daily wages of estate workers. (YP)

The workers should be given a very good increase and Rs.750.00 is very reasonable considering the manner the RPC are diverting funds to other projects that are runing at a loss. Its also appropriate to investigate the RPC before extending their leases. c

Why can't the estate workers be paid a decent salary, when Tea prices are at the highest.? When GOSL can spend lavishly on Tamashas?

Not sure from where anyone gets the idea the tea prices are at the highest. Assuming the prices are at highest the said prices are not given to the estates for the green leaf they supply. You are lucky if you could get Rs.50.00 per kilo for the green leaf you supply to the factories from the estates. Do the math and you will be surprised the production cost the estates have to bear. The govt. should step in relieve the estates or else there wont be any work or jobs regardless how high you pay for the workers!

There's a point in what pam is mentioning. Still, the fact remains that unless the workers are taken care of even the small profit the estates presently earn may not materialize. It's a tough situation and I doubt the government's ability to step in and relieve the estates when the government itself is strapped. Only a prudent management could see this difficulty through.
