Prime Minister D.M. Jayaratne said today that some economically backward persons had chosen themselves to be prisoners because of good meals served to them inside prisons.

The Prime Minister made this remark during the debate of the Justice Ministry. He said that, in Saudi Arabia, there are enough and more instances where prisoners are caned.

“Here, we do not give such harsh punishments. We do not know whether the absence of such cruel punishments is the reason for the alarming crimes in the country. Also, it appears that some people want to be prisoners forever. In prisons, they are provided with meals. If they are released, they do not have sufficient incomes to feed themselves with decent meals,” he said.  (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

I don't know what you guys find funny in this, this could be true, you guys are well off enough to have internet to read this site, so not being able to feed yourself with a meal a day is something you will not know of, but this could be true some people are suffering with a meal a day, the Govt should provide some benefits for those people. But regarding prison treatment 100% agree, we need to punish offenders, so they do not do it again. Otherwise they are going to continue to take part in criminal activities.

Anothr statement from our Prime Minister who never ceases to entertain us with howlers. That makes two for this week starting with the plea to stop import of wheat flour and fruits and now this incredible story of people preferring to stay in prison just for the meals.

You have rightly said it DM. All the crooks are in the parliament and innocents are in Jail. You know what? since 1948, not a single politician had been sent to Jail in this country for murder, thuggery and whole sale embazelmetns of public money
