DIG Lewke’s transfer cancelled

25 January 2010 07:46 am - 156     - {{hitsCtrl.values.hits}}

Elections Commissioner Dayananda Dissanayaka has ordered the cancellation of the transfer of Northern Province senior DIG Nimal Lewke. The polls chief has informed the IGP in this regard, the election monitoring body PAFFREL said.

Lewke, who is in charge of operations in the North, had been recalled to the police headquarters in Colombo.

Police transfers ahead of a Presidential election is a violation of election laws. However when contacted a senior police source insisted the DIG was not being transferred and will continue to hold on to his previous post but will operate from Colombo and be given additional duties.

The Election Commissioner on 7th December ordered all government departments, institutions, corporations and other entities not to hire, promote or transfer any employee until the presidential election results are released. (KB)

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:59 AM

I see that lot of government money can be saved in this wise action. Close down all outstation offices and operate from one office in Colombo. Looks more practical and efficient. The ploice sources who issued this statment must be thinking that we are third class fools to believe what they say.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:00 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:05 AM

This is the second time the EC cancelled a Police Transfer - last time it was the SSP Ampara. Has the IGP any shame ??. Is the HE so scared that he is desperate to break election laws?

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:06 AM

Keep up your good work. We all beg you to make sure a fair election will be held tomorrow. Government have broken all civilised norms up to now.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:08 AM

I say IGP dont you understand singhala or english. when the
EC says no transfers for any one who is doing government service you transfer the DIG from north. you are a baboon.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:22 AM

Suggest Mr. Lewke deploy 5000 impartial police officers in the north and order them to shoot at the people who are breaking the election law (riggers, ballow box stuffers etc.)

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:22 AM

    well done sir.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:28 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:29 AM

IGP, you better be prepared to pack your bags after 26th. SF is not going to tolerate a dumbo like you who does not understand the meaning of "No transfers".

P.S- And you better lose some weight too

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:30 AM

Well done Elections Commissioner. Now you must see that that the election is free and fair. This is a plea from aall voters who are suppressed.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:30 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:33 AM

    We appreciate your that decision.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:33 AM

Brainless guys do this kind of thing on the eve of an election

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:34 AM

This a joke. How can Lewke sit in Colombo & monitor the situation in the North???

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:37 AM

At a time like this it is difficult to figure out "who is wagging what" - Dog or the tail.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:39 AM

I think the government has already started rebuilding the country without waiting till 27th to give a better future.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:40 AM

good work... sri lanka need people like you

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:41 AM

What about the Army Official Transfers. why can't you cancel them too.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:45 AM

    Basillus, Well said!
Same sitution applies to Chief Justice who gave a life to a candidate day before election on the helping tsunamai episode.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:45 AM

Commissioner, we beleive that you will not allow to change the vote ballots when its taking for counting centre. You know that there is a big hole in MR's securiteis and they can mislead people's right.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:48 AM

Hats off to you sir.You have done a great job.Keep it up the good work!!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:48 AM

Quite true. But we have to appreciate the mans courage despite tremendous pressure from the Maha Raja himself. But lets all hope for a free and fair election.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:53 AM

By doing such things, SF does not have to campaign at all. MR and his close associates are doing the job for SF.

Are they really this foolish ????

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:54 AM

    Well-done sir....Really Grate decision

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:55 AM

Sri Lanka is suffering because her citizens don't love the truth but always want to deceive and to be deceived so the devil gain power by deceiving the nation.
They have no law and they are lawless that is the main problem and curse of this nation...So there is a curse on this nation...So wicked government was sent by God as a judgment for this nation..Once this Nation suffered from a war...But still war is ongoing...Because these wicked leaders earn monies billions and billions by corruptions, wickedness and by shedding innocent blood to gain their power and their blood cries out unto God Almighty asking judgment on this nation...So the Nation is suffering from poverty to poverty...The Nation should repent and come to God with changing heart if they want peace truly...And that peace cannot be given by any political leader...but only from God... By the Prophet

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:55 AM

This is how the def. sec. conducted affairs during the northern war, so he thinks why not Lewke do the same thing? He knows he can make sure that the votes of all displaced can be rigged with his henchmen in Lewkes seat in the north.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:57 AM

Either the IGP does not understand what the law is or he is a spineless servant boy of the President in anticipation of some livelihood after retirement like his predecessors. Either way, his days are numbered and he should be the first one to be kicked out when there is a change at the top.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:59 AM

No wonder ! MR claims that we won the war, being in CMB.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:59 AM

well done Mr.dissanayake.Let People decide ,Govt should allow the police to do their job without any fear or favour

    Monday, 25 January 2010 08:59 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:13 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:13 AM

Mr. Lewke, free thinking people of this country urge you to guarantee a free and fair election. The future of this country is on your hands. Don't succumb to the pressure. Give us a life. The nation will salute you. Two more days and you will be the IGP. Good luck! Jayawewa SF!

sf tide is high and will be by day people are lossing faith in the MR and team

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:17 AM

Someone needs to protect the law and order in this country, cause the government is failing to do so...

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:18 AM

As usual, SRI LANKA POLICE...Like no other

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:19 AM

Please make this beautifull Sri Lanka, a respected one by the entire world??

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:34 AM

I don't think this is the correct answer. He should not be brough to Colombo at all, if it is not a transfer. Why did the authorities think of bringing him to Colombo to be given additional duties at this moment? They could have kept him in the North and given addtional duties. There is something fishy here. Low down politics. SF hope you win and change all these dirty politics. Best of Luck!!!!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:36 AM

it is not a dis. made by def, sec

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:36 AM

    Beginning of 'Vishvasaneeya Wenasak'.??

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:41 AM

But the DIG wil still be at Colombo

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:43 AM

    Henry Perera! Clever question.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:45 AM

MR will not give up. He will pull everything he has to stay in power. He has everything to loose. WE HAVE TO GET ON TO THE STREETS on 27th if there is no honourable end. People - be ready to march for our freedom, its now or NEVER

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:46 AM

well done commisionar - keep it up your good work

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:51 AM

    get a life

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:51 AM

Well done Mr. Dissanayake. You have proved your back bone is strong. on 27th please ensure that power is transfered smoothly to the winner.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:52 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:56 AM

Commissioner Sir! Better late then never. Something is better than nothing. All these time ,you were not doing anything productive- just giving passive appeals and advice . A very very late start but please keep it up and continue. All the helpless people of this country will blesss you for redeeming this country

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:57 AM

    Well done commissioner.......keep in touch

    Monday, 25 January 2010 09:58 AM

    Very well done Sir !!!!!

    Highly appreciate your dare decision

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:02 AM

He learnt the lesson at much cost to us in last election when MR let him also down. So hope this time he will give evidence at an inquiry after the election.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:04 AM

Don't be panic. Wait till 27th. People will select MR OR SF. You are like a JVPer. What they always want is to get on to the streets and shout.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:04 AM

    hahah well done!!1 EC

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:04 AM

At least you had the back bone use your wide powers. These third grade fellows should be wiped out from the political field. They are not fit to clean even the toilets in Parliament.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:09 AM

The present IGP appears to be a number one HARAKA. He is doing MR no favours by behaving like this. Anyway it is now MR's Swan Song.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:13 AM

I cant imagine how certain news papers in Sri Lanka carry an article with full of lies (Not daily Mirror) it published an article today stated that as per keheliya Rambuwella worker community in middle east supporting MR. I’m employed in middle east and we would like to inform all Sri Lankan that we did not contact any baboon to support corrupt government and we have nothing to do with that article.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:18 AM

finaly we see justice prevailing hope this continues after tomorrow

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:19 AM

well done uncle. we are always with you......

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:20 AM

Great decision, We are fed-up with dirty politics!!!!!!!!!!!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:21 AM

Well done Sir.We need people with a backbone at this time.MR is trying ever trick in and out of the book and probably getting advice from his close friends in Iran whose leader manupilated the elections.
If we love our country we must rise up against this disgraceful behaviour.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:26 AM

Nimal Lewke, has an excellent reputation amongst all his friends and a great deal of respect, due his integrity and honesty shown towards all forms of citizens, fear not this Gentleman, he sides only with what is right !!!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:27 AM

EC has cancelled the transfer. but IGP has said tis not a transfer & Nl will perform his duties from Colombo. Absurd as is is if IIGP says "No tis not a transfer so let NL BE IN COLOMBO" will this elections commissioner have the guts to insist that lewke should be sent back to the north ?
I hope he will exercise his power at least now., or history will judge him as a spineless man who allowed injustice to prevail.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:30 AM

Not really a 'WoW' job! The 'EC' had done enough damages to the country in the past and now his planing to sideline with a new alliance! Most of the Bureaucrats in SL are highly corrupted!
    'God' Save SL!!!!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:32 AM

If Opposition is having so much much faith in the Election Commissioner why they called his powerless wimp until before the close of campaign day. He is an honest public official who saw both UNP and SLFP won elections. If both the parties want consensus really after the election, as no party will get the required two thirds, this gentleman can be kept as a go-between, facilitator or provider of good offices; if Anura Bandaranaike can arrange a sandhaanaya alliance and Mangala Samaraweera a common candidature why can't he do that? If both main parties agree he will do the unification on vital matters!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:39 AM

Brain Drain at political level ??? I thought only Mervyn has gone through the Brain Drain process.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:50 AM

Election Commissioner has become mad. It is not a transfer. DIG is not a field job. He can operate from anywhere.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:53 AM

Mr lal, Middle east is not a country . You a just an individual . Who cares whom you support.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:57 AM

    From 28th,
    Dr. Mervin will become Professor
    No more Sirasa
No more Comments on Daily Mirror
    No more Lankaenews web site
    More harrasment to Minorities,
Closer of some Christian and Catholic Churches

    Monday, 25 January 2010 10:58 AM

The people like election commissioner should be
given more responbsibilities after the election
so that the sri lankan political drainage could be
    cleaned out

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:01 AM

    good job Dis!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:04 AM

Nandana seems to be suitable to become the next IGP of Sri Lanka!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:07 AM

if this transfer is mainly due to additional duties why dont they get some one from any other places like south? why should only the north DIG should be transferred? this clearly shows the intension of our police (government). dont think that all the people are nursery kids.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:10 AM

IGP, why have you sold your soul to the Devil?. Have you no shame man?.
    Well done Commisioner.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:14 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:17 AM

    well done sir.....

this shows how much u respect democracy......

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:18 AM

This is really good. This is what we want. We need to build our Sri Lankans values destroyed by politicians. Law and Order. Value driven society. SF was trained to do "Code of Conduct". He is the man that can do this. This is not about party politics. This is about building our nation.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:18 AM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:21 AM

Countryman, why do you shout like this?

Mr. Commissioner please dont retire after the presidential elections. Hang in there for the geenral elections too. once you leave there will not be an independent elections commissioner. You are a patriot like all the outh who have sacrificed their lives in the past in the N & E. You are our last hope for democracy for many years to come.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 11:55 AM

    YOU HAVE DONE IT......!!!!!!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 12:00 PM

Well done Commissioner. Everyone must learn to stand up and do what is right, especially when working in the state sector. You may have scorn from a few but the vast majority will respect you, and truth & honesty will win and prevail in the end.

Mahinda Balasooriya by his actions is proving what a low character he is. We need officers of integrity and good character to run our Police. Only the will the public have faith, confidence & respect for them.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 12:08 PM

This is a JOKE ! How can a person in charge of North operate from Colombo ? Police source say he is not transferred. What then is this ? Api moda da eva gilinda ? Com on Commissioner DD, do something without saying they are not listening (like a kid). I find it hard to believe you are genuine, I think this is a way out for you ! Hook or by crook they will do it. Don't be a donkey.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 12:09 PM

Of course, Douglas will be furious to hear this!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 12:09 PM

    Shameless Sri Lankans !!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 12:11 PM

At the end.... you got a single vote !

    Monday, 25 January 2010 12:12 PM

Moda Sri Lankans will select MR. I am 100% sure

    Monday, 25 January 2010 12:28 PM

    # sun 2010-01-25 14:25 - Could we leave the Devil & God to their own devises and carry on like decent human beings. There has never ever been any proof of any Gods or Devils. Elections are conducted by humans and not by beings outside the realm of this earth. If people are foolish enough in the 21st century to believe in the "mambo jumbo" of Gods and Devils they deserve what they get. Talk sense to a fool and he calls you foolish.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 01:34 PM

Finally Mr EC thanks for the deed but please see it through at the election day too

    Monday, 25 January 2010 01:47 PM

Will Elections Commissioner's order be allowed to stand? If not, he has the powers to annul northern poll. His will has to prevail even if President is all powerful executive. Let's see what happens in the next 24 hours. The question is why he was transferred just now?

    Monday, 25 January 2010 02:03 PM

I think he already came to know the Election resut? Anyway good move, gentleman move.

    Monday, 25 January 2010 04:00 PM

    Monday, 25 January 2010 04:46 PM

The assumption is that the government is transferring 'unhelpful' police officers!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 05:58 PM

Keep it up sir, well done!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 06:05 PM

The Elections Commissioner should not hesitate to do everything within his power to ensure that the peoples' will is upheld! It is not only his constitutional duty, but also a duty cast upon him by society, in the interests of the nation, its children and those yet to be born!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 06:15 PM

Will it take effect after the Elections or immediately? I doubt that the DIG will be allowed to go-back, before the end of the Election!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 06:25 PM

The 'drama', is not over yet!

    Monday, 25 January 2010 07:33 PM

    Last 'trump,' also lost?

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 12:39 AM

I also feel that MR will win by hook or by crook, Largely due to uninformed or ill informed citizens who cannot make an informed decision like others who have access to proper public opinion. Sad isnt it? But I really hope I am wrong about this.

    Tuesday, 26 January 2010 01:23 AM

IGP is a Baboon alright. A fellow who cannot understand any langauge. He seems to be the biggest idiot in the police department. See the calibre of our IGP? We have peons in offices with better senses.

Well done EC you arer a great man.

It is clear which side of the divide the election commissioner is on. Congratulations to you. Probably the govt wanted Lewke to do something wrong, and he refused - that is why he was transfered immediately to Colombo. Congratulations to you too, Lewke, if this is a correct thinking.

At long last, we are seeing back bone from a long silent government official. Thank you Commissioner for whatever this is worth.......................
