President Maithripala Sirisena said today the Death Penalty would be introduced from next year with the approval of Parliament.

Addressing the national Drugs and Alcohol Temperance programme held at the main hall of the Galle Municipal Council, he said the decision to introduce the death penalty was taken in the aftermath of the several incidents of rape and the recent killing and sexual abuse of Seya Sandevmi.

“I am in a position to impose the death penalty using the executive powers vested in me. But, I thought that the better option was to discuss it with Parliament before introducing the death penalty,” the President has said. (D.G.Sugathapala)

Death penalty should be in the literal sense. Not life imprisonment and then pardons on presidents birthdays, Wesak day, independence day. Let us see if this president and the new govt will walk the talk.

    Saman77 Friday, 18 September 2015 02:20 PM

Very good. But your foreign minister says otherwise in the UNHRC " the government of Sri Lanka has assured the international community of its intention to abolish death penalty."

Every broken law requires a punishment, but taking the life of another person (be it a criminal or child ) should not be the answer. This is a slippery slope. Modern societies do their best to speak of rights of all sentient beings. In such a day and age to reinstate archaic laws hoping they become deterrents is not very progressive. Prevention of crime comes with eduction of social responsibilities. Criminals should be punished, but they should be treated humanely, with opportunity to realise, regret and if possible seek forgiveness for their cringes. Ultimately the point of the punishment should be to try and reintegrate a person back to society. Not to seek vengeance.

Now there is some sense and belief why the Gulf nations impose supreme death penalty to the convicts.

"kan:Thanks Sir. Also consider death penalty for drugs trafficking, possessing, selling, etc. like in some countries. " Death penalty for possessing? Really? what kind of education level have you had. What a person puts in his body is his rights. All most all the other countries are now moving away from drug prohibition and treating the drug problem as a health problem. Drug prohibition means we have set laws to create a major black market where the dealer can sell something no ones has and can sell to anyone regardless the age or quality of the drug.

As of 14h50 18th Sep 2015, 15 drug dealers seem to dislike your comment

If we kill those murders, we become murders too.The right penalty is lifetime jail a rehabilition programme.God has give us our lives and ONLY He can take it away!

When the rest of the Civilized world is doing away with this we being a country of geniuses would like to bring it back . Firstly our country is judicially corrupt. How on earth do we hang people when everything is suspect. Secondly it is proven worldwide that the death Penalty is a moot punishment that does not work. We should work from the grassroots level to stop creating an environment for thieves, sexual predators etc to thrive. The fundamental socio economic conditions that bring about these problems that are country is faced with have to be add dressed in a civilized manner. The death penalty is not preventative. If its was then there would be no crimes in the US yet the proof is in the pudding

    simon Friday, 18 September 2015 03:29 PM

Way to go Mr. Sirisena. Respect.

    Dileepa Sunday, 20 September 2015 12:58 PM

Death penalty should be implemented if the legal system, police, politicians, thinking pattern of people all are unbiased and treat fairly towards everyone... we are not yet satisfied about those yet.. if you implement the death penalty now , only powerless , poor will face it... politicians, rich people will kill and distribute drugs and the smaller scale people will be caught and will be hung
