“Darusman report” disrupts efforts to reinforce peace

The Government today claimed that the public release of the report by the Panel of Experts appointed by Secretary General Ban Ki-moon was a hindrance to establishing “security, peace and stability” in the country.

The Government has refused to refer to the report as one sanctioned by the UN and has dubbed it the “Darusman report”

“The public release of the Report at this stage is divisive, and disrupts our efforts to reinforce peace, security and stability in Sri Lanka. It feeds into the political agendas of interested parties,” the External Affiars Ministry said in a statement.

The government reiterated its stance that the report was “fundamentally flawed in many respects and that among other deficiencies, the Report is based on biased material, which is presented without any verification.”

The statement, by the government, regurgitated that accountability was an internal issue that would be dealt with domestically. “The Government has put in
place of its own accord a domestic mechanism dealing with a range of issues relevant to the conflict with a view to promoting reconciliation and confidence
among people. UN Member States have welcomed this measure. Furthermore, the Government has established an Inter-Agency Committee consisting of seven key Ministries in order to proceed with the interim recommendations of the domestic mechanism, the LLRC”, accords to the statement.

“The conclusions of the externally constituted “Darusman Panel” working from New York should not take precedence over the conclusions, still awaited, of the domestic process. The “Darusman Report” refers to many issues which are alleged to have occurred in Sri Lanka and which are currently subject to a domestic process. This material can be looked at by the LLRC should it wish to do so, depending on its own assessment of the contents.”

Good move to disassociate UN from this report that was not sanctions by UN voting body. However, government has to "show" that the LLRC investigates some of the things mentioned in that report.

SL is very Small Island. Yes indeed India, China, Russia and Iran are concern of the strategic place of this island. But I do not think they will be interested in our country at the cost of western power. If US and UN collated Europe wants to bring sanctions I think they will do it somehow and remember there is no risk involve in this game for them. I think the government should be more careful.

Does sri Lanka people know at the cold war time we took the China side by then PM Srimavo and we are now standing with only a BMICH while the Singapore which took the USA and Europe side is enjoying a luxury life today?
Politician must think about their people rather than their personal aspects. All the time slept - did a successful hunger strike against UN and now begging others.

We are poor we get food aid from them. We get money from UNESCO too. We don't contribute to them. So understand we are on the receiving side. We have be to be careful till we are in the receiving side. When money barks it makes sound when hungry mouth bark it won't be heard.
