Daily Mirror senior journalist Sandun A. Jayasekera was assaulted by security officers providing security at the Maharagama cancer hospital while President Mahinda Rajapaksa was attending an event at the hospital this morning

According to Mr. Jayasekara the security officers had not allowed him to enter the premises to cover the event despite him receiving an official media invitation. Mr. Jayasekara had produced his media card to the security officers but they had scolded him in filth.

However later officers of the Presidential security Division (PSD) who had recognized Mr. Jayasekera invited him inside to cover the event.

Following the event when Mr. Jayasekara was leaving the premises the soldiers who had earlier prevented him from entering the premises rounded him up and assaulted him seemingly embarrassed that he was allowed in to cover the event despite the soldiers not giving him permission.

Mr. Jayasekara was admitted to the Colombo National hospital for treatment a short while ago. (Daily Mirror online)

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 02:27 PM

So why is one journalist so important? The security personnel assault nearly anyone who they dislike and it never gets any press. But when it's a journalist it's somehow important.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 08:23 PM

This is the sort of thuggery that this government is notorious for.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 12:46 AM

What's the whole point in releasing Tissanaigam one day and assaulting another journalist the next? One step forward, two steps back

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 12:48 AM

Hey . Give your head a shake. Military or any one.. No one has the right to raise their hand.. specially to a Journalist.

    Thursday, 06 May 2010 03:43 AM

This is what the General has left for us, sorry I forgot yet more to come from the Parliament this time.

    Friday, 07 May 2010 12:06 AM

Need another 'force' to control the security forces?

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:57 AM

DM is doing a wonderful job.....this is totally unacceptable and undemocratic behavior..

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:31 AM

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:33 AM

Poor Sandun. This Press Freedom Sri Lanka style.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:33 AM

Dear President , you hold the media portfolio, please do not treat the journalists in this manner

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:34 AM

DAILY MIRROR IS INDEPENDENT NEWSPAPER -NOT MOUTH PIECE OF THE GOVERNMENT MAY BE THEY CHERRYPICK DAILY MIRROR JOURNALIST, WHY NOT LAKEHOUSE JOURNALIST?

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:39 AM

So now what are u going to do? Just leave it at that or bring this to the attention of the president/PSD. soldiers not insulted Mr jayasekera or Daily Mirror, they have insulted the President too. They must be punished severely. Army has no moral or discipline. They are behaving like thugs. No the war is over, atleast now recruitment precedure for forces (plus police) should be changed with immidiate effect.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:40 AM

This is a matter of inferiority complex, we can expect many such incidents in the future. this may have nothing to do with 'press freedom' its just that we are all siri lankans, so be it.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:44 AM

Over to you Mr.Keheliya Rambukwela. Take this as your first task and see that justice is done. The former Deputy Minister Dr. Merveyn Silva who resigned a short while ago volunteered to even safeguard the families of the journalists!

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:52 AM

WHAT? ARMY HAS BECOME VIOLENT AFTER THE WAR??-OVER TO YOU MR.DEFENCE MINISTER

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:52 AM

This is most disgusting. Hope the President will ensure that the rowdy soldiers involved in this dastardly act are properly dealt with.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:57 AM

President and new Minister must educate the rascals to conduct themselves and treat journalists like normal human beings, just because the soldiers and are sychopants does not mean they can bully everone around them.. time to set the standards for the security forces as well,

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:29 AM

THE MIGHTY SRI LANKAN MILITARY, ABOVE OUR PARLIAMENT.......... SRI LANKA GOING BANANAS

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 06:59 AM

BUT ISNT THE PRESIDENT THE MINISTER FOR MEDIA - HE SHOULD HAVE TAKEN ON-THE-SPOT ACTION? This is only the start of the Subha Anagathayak.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:00 AM

    how pathetic. soldiers at that.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:04 AM

Wait, they will appoint a commission to inquire into the allegation! CHANDRA NSW

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:05 AM

Who says the President was not aware of what was going on outside the gates of the premises? So what action (if any) would or could he take now?

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:07 AM

Here we go again! This should stop now! The people of this country should protest over violations of media freedom such as these. Shameful!

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 07:26 AM

    Oooops.......New trend .......

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 08:17 AM

Hang the Fellows who did this thing to a Media Journalist. there should be a change in 2010 not the same as everyday Journalists getting beaten , killed and kidnapped. there should be a thorough change. this should be bought to the attention of the president. everyday it's the same But Mr doesn't take any step but i would be very happy if Mr takes a stern Decision and bring this culprits to book so that in future everyone will learn a good nice lesson.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 08:47 AM

Indeed a shame for the upholders of peace or what ever. Embarrased.

    Wednesday, 05 May 2010 09:20 AM

Yeah.. there's a dream you can hold on to...
