A father who was arrested on charges of having repeatedly assaulted his wife and being cruel to his 16-year-old daughter who was sitting the GEC O/L examination was today ordered to be remanded until the examination ends on December 20.
In a complaint to the Slave Island police, the suspect’s wife said her husband who was often under the influence of liquor assaulted her and subjected their daughter to acts of cruelty in a way that hamperd her studies.
When the case was taken for inquiry by Colombo Fort Magistrate Thilina Gamage, the complainant told Court that her daughter was subjected to cruelty and ill-treatment by her father while she engaged in studies. She said the behaviour of her husband could directly affect her daughter at the O/L examination and pleaded Court that they be granted relief.
Sequent to the submissions made by the complainant and the prosecution, the magistrate ordered the suspect be remanded till December 20. (Lakmal Sooriyagoda)
These issues should be given more publicity in DM and ways to escalate the complaints of this nature to educate the innocent mothers/daughters/under aged boys. Not only remand they should be ordered to attend religious activities for a period of six months to learn good behavior.
