Cops rule out serial killing

The police have virtually ruled out connections between the killing of three beggars in Colombo last month and the discovery of the body of another beggar at Slave Island yesterday as the previous incident had been solved as the suspect was arrested.

Police Spokesperson S.P Preshantha Jayakody told Daily Mirror online that despite no arrests made so far, the Slave Island police were continuing investigations into the latest death.

“Last month’s killings have been solved and one suspect is in remand. The only thing I now know is that one beggar was killed by an unknown person on Tuesday and the Slave Island police are conducting investigations,” the Police Spokesperson said.

The body of a beggar, believed to be an invalid, was found near the Gangaramaya Filling Station on Tuesday morning with severe injuries to the head. The Colombo Judicial Medical Officer was directed to submit to Court the post mortem examination report on the body of the beggar.

Last month, the bodies of three beggars were found in Kollupitiya, Slave Island and Bambalapitiya while led to one suspect being arrested whom the police believe was responsible for the murders.

Police said the suspect had killed or attacked his victims by dropping a huge stone on their heads. The killings and attacks took place in Armour Street, Maradana, Mount Lavinia, Peliyagoda and Wellawatte within a two week period. (Daily Mirror online)
