Opposition Leader Ranil Wickremesinghe today in Parliament asked the government to conduct an independent inquiry into the incidents in and around the building of the party headquarters, Sirikotha on Monday.

Making a special statement, Mr. Wickremesinghe begged pardon from the party and the people in this regard.

“I assured Parliament earlier that there would not be any change of the opposition leader post. I can reassure it today,” he said amid applause by the government members including Economic Development Minister Basil Rajapaksa.

However, he said though he was able to retain his position as the opposition leader, his vehicle was damaged in the commotion created by some protestors.

“In this regard, we have lodged a complaint with the police. Some persons have been arrested. I ask for an impartial inquiry. I want such inquires to be conducted without any interference. I regret the incident. I beg pardon from the party and the people of this country because I could not take steps to prevent such disturbances,” he said. (Kelum Bandara and Yohan Perera)

If you can't control your own party people, you are not fit to be a president of this country.

If it happened we (including you) have to find some place to hide. We cannot forget the terror of Premadasa era. Sajith premdasa proved it with his mob attack.

I cannot understand these people commetns. UNP can't win election not because of Ranil. It is MR's imense popularity. The day MR lost that anybody can take UNP to victory. Ranil is a gentleman. Nobdy can accuse him for anything. Don't forget what Premadasa did to the party and the country. Please ............... no more Premadasa era. You can see without power how Sajith behaves!

Ranil can't win a national election. He does dirty works to protect the post of opposition leader. All accept ranil's leadership will support the MR's Regime indirectly.

I am neither a UNP voter or a UFPA voter as such what I have observed is there should be a independent inquiry as to how a candidate could select about 100 electors from about 300 representatives elected by the party members for Local Government Bodies, Provincial Councils and Parliament who most from the present 100 will be electing him and as such where is the democracy in the party and the moral value of such a victory

    Dilan Tuesday, 20 December 2011 08:39 AM

Still Ranil has not become the leader of the country due to our unfortunality

    Handipora Tuesday, 20 December 2011 08:14 AM

How dare you say so when the entire country was witness to everything what happened and who were leading and behind the mob? Sajith has to take the blame himself.

    B.R.Fernando Tuesday, 20 December 2011 07:46 AM

    Dear Sir,,
I can see the truth that you are very well qualified to the job of opposition leader and UNP Leader also you are very much qualified to the job of Sri Lanka's Leader.. But the fact is that you do not know how to win the hearts of the people to get votes. You do not posses required charisma for that and people of this country beleives you as a leader who cannot win elections and that fact cannot be changed.
Knowing these things hanging onto the power of the party using various tactics are not favorable to the party and party keeps on losing elections and loosing the vote base at faster rate.
Dear Sir why dont you leave the party leadership honorobly and allow a predecissor to be successfull under your guidance??

    tkds Tuesday, 20 December 2011 07:21 AM

This round was just to wound him. make him weak & now Sajith is well positioned to knock him off next time. What Sajith should do is use his deputy leader position that has no power and build his base like his father did with the powerless PM position that he got during JR's time.

    nikita Tuesday, 20 December 2011 07:15 AM

its your victory , our Karume.

Elephant Supporter Tuesday, 20 December 2011 07:18 AM

In a buddhist country like Sri Lanka stupid decidents threw stones at a Lord Buddha statue, throwing stones at Mr. Ranil Wickramasinghe would be a peace of cake for them. In a sitution like that we really appreciate that you didn't back down.
