Commotion over periodic table

A A A

Candidates who sat today’s Chemistry paper I had been agitated and distressed because they were not provided a copy of the periodic table with the question paper unlike in previous years.

Examinations Commissioner W. M. J. Pushpakumara commenting on the situation said the candidates were not given the periodic table because the professors who set the paper this year had instructed us not to do so.

However, teacher unions blamed the Examinations Department for not informing the candidates of this decision prior to the start of the examination.
According to teacher unions, the paper had contained three questions based on the periodic table. (Lakna Paranamanna)

You guys simply cannot change your thinking pattern. Still living in 18th century. This is the age of IT, Internet.... any information is available at your finger tips. Why would anyone needs to memorize anything. Our A/L students needs to forget chemistry concepts and start memorizing the periodic table.
If you are a practicing chemist, tell me one place that you would need to recall your memorized table. Unless of course you are practicing in a 13th century cave
Even on the alphabet, why would anyone needs to memorize the order of letters. :)

    Punchi putha.
Even they provide also , you're not going to pass the exam. Because even if you don't know the periodic table, what you can do on the exam. Go and prepare for the next year exam. Poor fellow

    Student Thursday, 16 August 2012 08:06 AM

On your days may be there is 30 odd elements. But now scientist have found 100 odd elements and lot of characteristic of them. What is the point of memorizing them if we can directly get it from the table.

    sach Thursday, 16 August 2012 03:21 AM

do u really think one can answer an english ppr once provided with an alphabet?

    Sadarana_Kota Thursday, 16 August 2012 03:20 AM

Totally agree....I can still remember the entire periodic table

    manjula Thursday, 16 August 2012 02:06 AM

we sat and passed chemistry without this table in papaer. if someone is planned to pass the exam he/she should know at least imporant groups as S,D group.
    so this blam is bullshit.

    lankaputha Wednesday, 15 August 2012 01:58 PM

A/L is not an exam to find out how much you can memorize.
As well, Periodic table is not to be used to find out the name of the element of the place it is, but the additional details like weight etc.. Me too has a A pass, and I used the table.

    Jayaa Wednesday, 15 August 2012 12:53 PM

I memorized it this way. "Nangi (Mage Alla SiPa Sanasan Kelle(Cl) and .. so on. Then the Activity Series as "Pottha (P) Berunu(Ba) Kehetu(Ca) Somata (Na)....". Now it seems these kind of practices are gone for ever.

To say that you know Chemistry well, you should know the Periodic Table and the Activity Series in memory. Otherwise you are not competent in the Chemistry Subject.

    Skeptic Wednesday, 15 August 2012 12:20 PM

Wrote the test and really didn't need the periodic table.

    Munster Wednesday, 15 August 2012 11:23 AM

Agreed Agreed Agreed... It is not required to memorize the table but how to use it. No one asks you when you are doing a job what is the atomic number of that and this but should know how to use it in applications. This is what wrong with our education system. It is true that some people can memorize it after using it for sometime but that is irrelevant.

    Lecturer Wednesday, 15 August 2012 11:10 AM

If in the past Periodic Tables were given to students and for the New Syllabus the professors decided not to give the same, at the beginning of the course the students and teachers should have been informed so that students had time to memorize the whole periodic table using whatever method they adopt. Besides Chemistry New Syllabus is very much vast than what we did for A/Ls so the students have more important things to learn than memorizing Little Benny Boy.

No arguments, if anything provided earlier exams should not stop without given prior notice. Then students will gets ready with that. e.g.When child come home to have his/her usual meal, If mother gone out with out prepare lunch and even without informing child that no meal today, will be right action she should do?

    Tharaka Wednesday, 15 August 2012 11:03 AM

I believe the perodic table wasn't given by mistake it's because the paper was designed to be answered without supplying the perodic table.

The best example is that the first question itself was "what is the number of elements present in the first four periods?", if the periodic table was supplied what is there to answer?

    Jeevan Wednesday, 15 August 2012 08:03 AM

One needs to memorise the periodic table, at least up to 30 elements, and some special groups, before sitting the exam. I dont remember using a periodic table in the exam hall. I have the right to tell as I got an A pass for Chemistry. This news item is just a blame game.

Lanke Banda Wednesday, 15 August 2012 11:01 AM

shut up you people i am a student who did the exam and we know how we suffer what do u know!! get lost!!!

    Professor Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:51 AM

In our days we memorised only few chemicals and for the past couple of years the periodic table was given because there were questions not only from the first 20 chemicals as in the past. Just because for combined mathematics we use logarithms for solving problems the students don't have to memorize the logarithms table. The log tables are given at the exam. Likewise as questions from any of the chemicals could be given for the New syllabus Chemistry Paper the periodic tables should be given to the students as in the past A/L exams. At least for the Chemistry Paper II we hope periodic tables will be given to the candidates.

Bonnie Mallie Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:37 AM

you mean... A for Ant and Z for Zebra ??...lol

    Jeevan Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:35 AM

Not only the periodic table, even the reactivity series.

    vaz Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:38 AM

Periodic table always given with all UK chemistry examinations!

    Amos Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:39 AM

Big deal! In my day we knew the periodic table by heart - Little Benny Boy Caught Naughty Ossie .... (unprintable)

    Varuna Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:28 AM

Agent kolla, talk about something you know. The periodic table is used so often by those who do chemistry that they would memorize same.
In your so called open book exams, do you provide an English alphabet chart too, with nice pictures, like an ant for A and a zebra for Z ?

    TIA Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:27 AM

What is the point of simply memorising a Periodic Table? I bet if you ask the two commentors at the top to recite the Periodic Table they would have little recollection of it. It is unnecessary to learn anything by rote, because real life does not test your skills of memorising. Our education systems need to emphasise critical and analytical thinking. What with morons sitting in the Ministry of Education, Teachers Union, within local Universities, and anyone within the public/government school system in general, I don't suppose we will see any changes for better education in our lifetime. Siiigh.

    Roshan Wednesday, 15 August 2012 10:07 AM

Yes it is true that they have to memorise the 30 elements, but since they were provided with the table in the earlier occasions the students must have ignored it thinking that it is the waste of time to memorise.

    Agent Wednesday, 15 August 2012 09:56 AM

Simple Sri Lankan Style of Education. Why would you want to memorize a periodic table. Whats the use, do we test their memory skills or chemistry skills. High time we change this paradigm and introduce open book exams with some practical questions without asking them to memorize everything.

    Grow up People!

    hmm Wednesday, 15 August 2012 09:15 AM

agreed.. i too can't remember using a periodic table at the A/L's and I used to memorise it..

    Varuna Wednesday, 15 August 2012 09:26 AM

Dear Jeevan, thank you for having the courage to say this. This is a blame game and it is silly how they have something to say everyday of the exam !

    Jay Wednesday, 15 August 2012 08:58 AM

Why do they have to give the periodic table? It is as dumb as giving the alphabet for an English exam!!!

buffaloa citizen Wednesday, 15 August 2012 08:04 AM

A student sitting for the A'level Chemistry should know the periodic table by memory. If a copy had been given on earlier exams, then it is wrong...because the periodic table is plain basics in Chemistry.
