DMK chief M Karunanidhi on Friday urged a pro-Tamil outfit leader, on an indefinite fast here since the last three days to press for expelling Sri Lanka from Commonwealth of Nations and shifting a meeting of CHOGM from Colombo, to protest through other non-violent means.
".. on behalf of DMK, I insist that he breaks fast and continues to protest in other non violent ways," he said in a statement.
K Thiagarajan, General Secretary of Tamil Desiya Viduthalai Iyakkam has been on an indefinite fast for the last three days, demanding that India boycott the Commonwealth Heads of Government Meeting (CHOGM) at Colombo next month, alleging that the island government was guilty of genocide of Tamils in Sri Lanka.
Karunanidhi said his party had also conveyed a similar demand to the Centre and recalled the statements of Union Ministers from Tamil Nadu that the Centre would take an appropriate decision on the issue at the right time.
The DMK chief said he was prompted to ask Thiagarajan to give up his fast as it was important for him to live, having had his life sentence revoked in the past.
Political parties in Tamil Nadu, including DMK, have already demanded that Prime Minister Manmohan Singh stay away from CHOGM in Sri Lanka.
On October 1, the Madras High Court had directed Chennai Police to grant permission to Thiagu to observe the indefinite fast after he moved the court on being denied permission to go on fast by the Police Commissioner. (PTI)
No way, his death will make one less pro-LTTE for Karu and that's unthinkable!!!

When these so called 'fast unto death' people start getting hungry, some lame excuse always come up!
Saskia Saturday, 05 October 2013 07:00 AM
Apart from whether it is a tamil or sinhalese or any human being we are, we should not allow SL to hold the CHOGM because of the genocide and war crime allegations. SL should first clear these allegations by an independent investigation.
NS Saturday, 05 October 2013 06:38 AM
The actual hegemony is not by Sinhalese against Tamils in Sri Lanka. The real, visible and forceful hegemony is at the global level i.e. the Tamil hegemony by majority Tamil community living all over the world against minority Sinhalese community in this tiny Sri Lanka. No any other community is exercising such a despicable hegemony against a minority community in today’s global context. The world leaders should look at this problem from that perspective. Please do so.

Political Joker in action again..
Suq Madique Saturday, 05 October 2013 05:49 AM
Why doesn't he do a death-fast for the northern fishermen being deprived of their livelihood by Indian poachers?
Rohana Saturday, 05 October 2013 04:51 AM
We feel that Tamil Nadu politicians are some what mad. They don't any other thing to think about rather than harassing our people who comes to visit Buddhist shrines or other things. Sending fishermen to our area and making a wrong picture that our Navy is harassing them. It is very bad nature of conduct by them. It is somewhat similar to happening in Afghanistan etc. They don't think that other races also like them, were killed by LTTE.
Ken Saturday, 05 October 2013 03:18 AM

Why are these idiots getting publicity. When will the emotional Tamil Nadu jokers mind their own business.
Nodrog Saturday, 05 October 2013 04:27 AM
Maybe karu wants to grab the spotlight and go on a death-fast himself. But we all know how his earlier stunt ended.
Piyal Saturday, 05 October 2013 04:21 AM
You have to stop publishing the things these politicians say just to get some voter millage. You as a newspaper should look at the credibility of these politicians and decide whether they are using you as to promote themselves! They haven't done for peace before and why publish these stupid comments they make in your good paper!
Nihal Amarasekera Saturday, 05 October 2013 04:12 AM
