Dr V Shanmugarajah, who served in the battle zones during the last stages of the war, said today that the LTTE had forced him to exaggerate the number of civilian casualties.

He was giving evidence before the Lessons Learnt and Reconciliation Commission (LLRC) at the BMICH today.

Dr Shanmugarajah gave high casualty figures to aid agencies and the media from within the combat zone during the last stages of the war. (NH)

It is true that Dr. bloated the figure.I wont believe that the Dr. did it under LTTE pressure alone.Like TNA, enjoyed honey moon with the tigers even after their leaders were brutally murdered by tigers some doctors also supported the tigers.Now terrorism has completely been eradicated.Before the doctors were getting salary from the government and served for LTTE.It is true that they couldnt speak against LTTE.My concern is about THE FAMOUS BBC.Did the BBC,especially Tamil service confirm the figures?.Doesnt the BBC have a responsibility to confirm the news.

We all knew what he was doing. Unfortunately foreign news organizations and NGOs took his word as gospel truth. Enormous damage was done to the reputation of the country and the armed forces. Sadly, there is no way to undo the damage now even after he admitted that he lied.

Civilians are bound to be killed in a war situation as its happening now is Pakistan and Afghanistan (Drone attacks), and as happened in Ghaza and Iraq. No government or an organization has accepted responsibility upto now in any of those conflict situations. Has the US and the NATO accepted responsibility? or Israel for the massacres in Ghaza?

These are unfortunate situations and bound to happen and you can't do anything about it,
